From Hard-Boiled to Infernal Affairs to Line Walker, the undercover cop torn between two worlds is a celebrated trope of Hong Kong police crime films. One of the most classic representatives of this subgenre is New Wave director Alex Cheung's award-winning 1981 feature Man on the Brink. The gritty thriller about a troubled officer embedded in the triads won Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor (Eddie Chan) at the 19th Golden Horse Film Awards.

Police officers Chiu (Eddie Chan) and Tai (Kam Hing Yin) get sent undercover into the triads. In order to fulfill his mission, Chiu falls out with his family and girlfriend, and immerses into the underworld. He gains the trust of gangsters to acquire intel and help crack cases, but no one other than his handler knows that he's the good guy. Over time, Chiu becomes increasingly unsettled by his role and the boundary between right and wrong.
