THE FEATURE FILMS NEON GENESIS EVANGELION DTS COLLECTOR'S EDITION (Japan Version)(2)Our Price: US$68.99February 24, 2007 my review
this region 2 version is significantly better than the us. region 1 release. this title benefits from the evangelion renewal process that was carried out by anno and gainax, as they went back to the original 16mm negatives to remaster it. manga entertainment's release does not have this print, and is 4:3 letterbox not 16:9 widescreen anamorphic. this dvd is quite sharper than the u.s. release and would look fine on a widecreen hdtv display. the american release is much softer in picture quality, though is quite good for the time it was produced 1999 or something, and is the same master anno had for the pre-remastered versions on japanese laserdisc and dvd. but is you want a version that lives up to the hype of modern technology this is the one you want to purchase. alo the dts sound remaster is sigificantly cleaned up over the previous 5.1 and theatrical japanese audio releases.
this version also contains a very nice and clean stereo mix for those who don't have the equipment to reproduce dts sound, a dts decoder or dts compliant receiver are the only drawbacks as i can see.
the one thing otaku's out there may complain about however is that it does not contain the 2.0 stereo dolby surround mix released for theaters, the 2.0 here is a mixdown of the new dts 5.1. the only release that has the thetrical audio as i'm aware of at this point is the rare and very expensive EVA movie boxset released on laserdisc, and is a coveted collector's item. if you already own that you probably wonder why do i need another version? because the image fidelity is a major leap forward, because it a re-master personally overseen by anno, and of course it's EVA the most awesome anime ever made. now that i explained that all that's left to discuss is who do you like better rei or asuka?
Urusei Yatsura 2 - Beautiful Dreamer (DVD) (Japan Version)February 24, 2007 best version to own.
this version of the movie which is region 2 and was released in japan is beautifully restored from a new film print and is anamorphic widescreen 16:9. Better color definition than on the us release, though in a places a bit dark, (obviously this is due to the source print which was very old) while the remastered us version was a bit bright and had the contrast turned way up, and also only full screen/pan and scan 4:3 which significantly crops oshii's masterpiece.
Lupin III -Castle of Caliostro (Japan Version)February 23, 2007 this is an awesome movie!
this region 2 japan edition besides having the japan language track also has the english streamline dub done by carl macek, and which is absent on both dvd editions released in the u.s.a. by manga. the vhs exists in the u.s. but is very rare, so for those of you in america with a multi region dvd player this is the one to own.
