YesAsia Editorial Description

After making a successful debut in Japan, MBLAQ turn into works of fine art for their third mini-album Mona Lisa. The members portray iconic figures - Zorro, Beatles, Boy George, Papillon, Boy George, and James Dean - on their unique album cover. MBLAQ teamed up again with the makers of Stay for their new title song, a Spanish electro dance number that likens a woman's mysterious expression to Mona Lisa.

엠블랙 미니앨범 3집 - Mona Lisa

01. Ojos Frios (Bandoneon by.고상지)
02. 모나리자 (Mona Lisa) (타이틀곡)
03. 모르겠어요
04. 알면서 그래
05. ONE

MBLAQ, where Mona Lisa meets Boy George
There are many questions one could ask about MBLAQ's latest mini-album. Like, why is Cheon Dung dressed as Boy George? What do Zorro and Papillon have to do with Mona Lisa? And, really, why is Cheon Dung dressed as Boy George? Puzzling choice of iconic figures to cosplay aside, Mona Lisa is an impressive effort from MBLAQ, the group's strongest release overall both vocally and musically.

The album gets off to a classy start with the bandoneon instrumental intro Ojos Frios, leading into the title song Mona Lisa (Track 2) which also employs the accordion in its opening. Per standard for title songs, Mona Lisa is a catchy dance track with a lot of repetition, but it has more ballad sensibilities and less electro-beats than other K-pop plugs out there. G.O and Lee Joon's vocals are nicely highlighted in clean solo sections underlined only by guitar chords, and the slight vocal distortion applied to Mir's rap is a brilliant touch. The song is directed towards an unattainable woman and her unreadable expression, the Mona Lisa who is loved but cannot be had. It's actually a fairly poetic comparison for a pop song, although the song mostly scrimps on lyrics in favor of an abundance of "ohs", "ahs", and "las", but this actually works very well with the song's simple yet striding hooks and transitions.

Songwriting credits are identical for all the songs in the album: written and composed by Rado, Jin, and Won Taek, arranged by Rado, and rap by Dok2. With the same team creating the whole album, Mona Lisa puts forth a very consistent sound. While BLAQ Style had some awkward patches, this mini-album stays tight and uptempo throughout, without ever getting too fast or too slow. There are no surprises, but also no letdowns.

If you like the title song, odds are you'll like the rest of the album as well. "I Don't Know" (Track 3) and One (Track 5) are cut from the same cloth as Mona Lisa, balancing a mellow dance melody with strong beats and a fresh arrangement. I especially liked "I Shouldn't Say" (Track 6). MBLAQ has been solid with ballads in the past, but "I Shouldn't Say" is easily the group's strongest vocal performance yet for a ballad. From BLAQ Style to now Mona Lisa, we're definitely hearing a more vocally mature and ambitious MBLAQ this year.

The packaging design for Mona Lisa is also worth a mention. Each member gets his own snazzy, specially designed mini-LP sleeve cover and foldout, and the individual concepts work a lot better than what the combined album cover indicates. Even the Cheon Dung as Boy George photos actually look fine.

Mona Lisa... Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
About the CD packaging and designing, WOW I honestly never expected such a thing. It was, in all words, amazing and totally unexpected! Inside the plastic cover were a set of what looks like vinyl discs, one holds the CD, and the other 5 are for each members! Really, it's my first time seeing something like that XD. The CD front was also very nice, it looks like some black&white wanted paper or something!

I was very surprised to find out the boys were like cosplaying. And to tell the truth, their roles didn't match a bit: Papillon Seungho dressed up in dirty, ragged striped prison clothes with scratches on his face and all kinds of chains and ropes around his body, James Dean G.O. dressed up in rough denim that shows off his impressive chesthair and shiny hairstyle and all kinds of rings on his hands, Zorro Joon with sword and whip and black cloak and cold eyes, damn he's just that sexy XD, Boy George Thunder with leopard pants, thick eyeliner and huge biceps, but unfortunately all that lipstick made him look... Ugh... Meanwhile, I ROFLed like crazy when I found out Mir was "The Meatles" LOL!!!!! He looks a little dorky, but the idea was just so crazily funny and still, Mir's always adorable :3. No really, he looked so cute *fangirling* :3.

I also received the poster and it's also very nice, but a little too soft. I prefer hard-paper posters...

Overall, outstanding! Unique style, fresh music, great boys. Huge recommended for all A+!

Mona Lisa... Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This mini album is amazing and is a total must-have for all A+!

For this comeback, MBLAQ, again showed a huge change in their music style. Ojos Frios made a great intro with its unique yet familiar West Side feeling. I just couldn't believe that they were still the MBLAQ that we knew before!

Mona Lisa was definitely a hit. I got hooked like the first time listening to the song. The boys have improved so much, especially Joon! I just love his vocal in this. The song has powerful, attractive melody which gives off a sexy, mature feeling, and at the same time a bit pain too, but not too much, overall I'd the song's like the best title track of MBLAQ so far.

'모르겠어요' was brighter, but not the same cute, young style we knew in G.O.O.D Luv or One Better Day, but a little manlier and fresher, and all the autotune made the song even more attractive. I personally like the song a lot :).

'알면서 그래' and ONE are more of Pop R&B tracks with sweet, mid-slow melodies, and they're pretty much easy-to-listen-to songs with delightful feelings :)

'말하지말걸...' was a sweet ballad track with soft, gentle, slow melody and vocals. It's also a very nice song, though it's loving, but still firm enough to not become mushy. I love it :)
