YesAsia Editorial Description

Midnight Diner (2015)
After three hit seasons, the late night television drama adaptation of Abe Yaro's manga series hits the silver screen with its first feature film. Following the show's original concept, Midnight Diner is a slice-of-life drama about the owner (Kobayashi Kaoru) of a late-night Shinjuku alleyway restaurant and the stories of his customers. Directed by series regular Matsuoka Joji (Tokyo Tower: Mom and Me, and Sometimes Dad), the ensemble drama follows several characters who frequent the neighborhood hangout: a money-obsessed woman who finds love with a geeky salesman, a homeless young woman who takes refuge as the owner's new assistant cook, a man who comes to Tokyo from Fukushima to find the volunteer that he's fallen for and a mystery urn that's been left at the diner. In the spirit of the television drama, Midnight Diner is a gentle, moving and sometimes dryly amusing drama about the little stories in the big city known as Tokyo.

Midnight Diner 2 (2016)
Alongside the airing of the fourth season Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories in 2016, the series also released its second silver-screen feature, again directed by Matsuoka Joji. Keeping with the heartwarming episodic formula of small human stories, Midnight Diner 2 welcomes back regulars like Odagiri Joe, Matsushige Yutaka, Mitsuishi Ken and Yo Kimiko, and adds new diners with stories to share. Tabe Mikako, reprising her role from the first film, takes in an elderly woman (Watanabe Misako) who was conned into coming to Tokyo and is looking for her estranged son. Kawai Aoba plays a stressed editor who falls for a man (Sato Koichi) she meets at a funeral, but he may not be what he seems. Ikematsu Sosuke plays a soba shop owner's son whose aimless personality and relationship with an older woman (Kojima Hijiri) greatly worry his mother.

Product Information

Midnight Diner 1

The Master’s cooking and the friendly low-key atmosphere of his establishment fill the Midnight Diner night after night. One evening a burial urn left there brings a frown, but to his customers this is something new and it becomes the seed of entertaining speculation. An old customer, Tamako, comes in one night for the first time in a while. The mistress of a wealthy man who has died, she is between patrons, and strikes up a conversation with a young man. Michiru, a girl from the provinces without any money, walks out without paying her bill, then returns and begs the Master for a job. Living upstairs, she becomes part of the life of the diner, all the while her past is coming in search of her.
Kenzo, a victim of the Fukushima tsunami disaster, comes to Tokyo and stirs things up in pursuit of Akemi, a diner regular. But through all of these small dramas, the question remains about what will become of the burial urn.

Midnight Diner 2
‘Meshiya’ is a small one-man, counter-only operation, where Master (Kaoru Kobayashi) serves up good food in a comfortably informal atmosphere. Several of the regulars tonight, having alerted funerals, are in black clothing, and now Setsuko (Aoba Kawai) comes in, also in black. She has not been to a funeral, however, she simply goes out dressed in black as a way of striking up conversations in bars to relieve work-related stress. Some days later, however, she goes to a real funeral, meets an attractive middle-aged man (Koichi Sato), and falls in love. The man, however, turns out to be less than what he had seemed.

Meanwhile, the widow Seiko (Midoriko Kimura) runs a nearby soba noodle shop. She is a somewhat controlling mother to her son Seita (Sousuke Ikematsu), who she does not know is involved with Saori (Hijiri Kojima), older than he is, also a regular at Meshiya, and a friend of Seiko. Seita, to make matters worse, prefers the Master’s thicker upon noodles to the soba his mother makes. Tricked into believing her son is in desperate need of money, Takiko (Misako Watanabe) flies to Tokyo from distant Kyushu. Sympathetic to her plight, the regulars take her under their wing, and team up to help after her brother-in-law (Hisashi Igawa) reveals why she seems so hesitant to contact her son.

Everyone has a story, all through the year they come to taste Master’s down-home cooking, and to leave the Midnight Diner refreshed and full.

'Midnight Diner 2', like the earlier movie and like the TV series of the same name, is video comfort food. As always, the stories told are thoughtfully conceived and written and lovingly performed by a brilliant cast. All the regulars are here again, and the newcomers around which this film's primary stories revolve all are welcome additions.

This second film in the series seems darker in tone than the first; most of its tales involve death and loss. But it never becomes morose and it concludes in a wonderfully heartwarming fashion, which seems natural and honest. Odagiri Joe fans will be happy to see that their favorite police officer has a bigger role in this film. Kudos to the writers: May they serve up many more of these tasty dishes. My appetite for them is boundless!
