YesAsia Editorial Description
Popular actress Ko Hyun Jung (Woman on the Beach) charms in spades as the unlikely heroine of the action comedy caper Miss Conspirator. Like director Park Chul Kwan's early 2000s hit Hi! Dharma!, Miss Conspirator offers a zany mix of comedy, action, and romance, eliciting laughs with unexpected scenarios and inspired characters. Ko Hyun Jung is surrounded by an impressive lineup of actors - Yu Hae Jin, Park Shin Yang, Sung Dong Il, Lee Moon Sik, and Ko Chang Seok - all of whom deliver hilarious, idiosyncratic performances.

Professional Review of "Miss Conspirator (2012) (VCD) (Hong Kong Version)"
This professional review refers to Miss Conspirator (2012) (DVD) (2-Disc) (First Press Limited Edition) (Korea Version)
Miss Conspirator is a Korean comedy action romance directed by Park Chul Kwan, known for his popular 2001 gangster spoof Hi Dharma! The film is headlined by top actress Ko Hyun Jung, star of hit television series like Queen Seon Duk and What's Up, Fox? here taking on a somewhat different role as a nervous, socially awkward woman who accidentally gets mixed up with gangsters and drug deals. The film also features a fine supporting cast of character actors, including Yu Hae Jin (The Unjust), Park Shin Yang (The Big Swindle), Sung Dong Il (The Client), Lee Moon Sik (Battlefield Heroes) and Ko Chang Seok (Over my Dead Body) as the various thugs, cops and drug smugglers making her life interesting.
The film follows Ko Hyun Jung as Soo Ro, an unfortunate woman in Busan who suffers from extreme anxiety attacks as a result of a near-drowning accident earlier in her life. Thrown into panic when her beloved sister goes away on a trip, she meets and confides in a nun she meets in a cafe who asks her to make a delivery to her former love in a nearby hotel. Arriving on the scene, Soo Ro finds the man dead and herself caught up in a deadly feud between rival drug gangs who are convinced that she is the mysterious Miss Go With the police also on her trail, she joins up with a double agent called Red Shoes (Yu Hae Jin), but it soon becomes clear that even he is not necessarily the trustworthy type. Miss Conspirator was on the receiving end of some pretty uncomplimentary reviews on its original release in Korea, which is probably a little harsh, as while unambitious and generic, it's a well-made film that's perfectly enjoyable with appropriate expectations. Park Chul Kwan does a decent job in the director's chair, keeping the focus chiefly on the comedy and throwing in a few action set pieces and thrills here and there. Despite lacking any real stand-out scenes, the film moves along at a reasonable pace, and is generally quite amiable, most of the humour revolving around harmless slapstick and the expected identity mix-ups and misunderstandings. Whilst generally light hearted and daft, Park knows when to be wacky and when to inject a touch of seriousness, and the plot itself is surprisingly involved, with lots of double crossing and side switching. The final outcome is never in any doubt of course, though the film manages a few entertainingly silly twists along the way, keeping viewers on-board for the ride. Like many recent commercial films of the last few years, Miss Conspirator is first and foremost a star vehicle written around its lead, and thankfully actress Ko Hyun Jung is very likeable in the title role. Playing a markedly different character to the kind of strong, loud women she is usually known for, Ko makes the most of playing Soo Ro as a timid and often quite pathetic creature, adding a little emotional substance and keeping her sympathetic and vaguely believable. The film doesn't go too far in transforming her from meek mouse to the action heroine suggested by the adverts and posters, and the fact that she remains fairly useless and terrified for most of the running time makes things more interesting and amusing. Unsurprisingly, Soo Ro is the only fleshed out character in the film, with most of the male supporting cast on hand mainly as one-note goons, though all seem to have been having a fair amount of fun and turn in suitably wacky appearances. Sadly, this does mean that her romance with Yu Hae Jin really takes off, however the film is effective enough in its comedy and action for this not to matter too much. Although none of this is sufficient to make Miss Conspirator particularly memorable, it's a pleasant and jovial way to pass a couple of hours, with a decent quotient of laughs and action. Ko Hyun Jung is as appealing as ever, and lifts the film up a few notches with a typically charming performance, and with a game supporting cast and solid direction from Park Chul Kwan, genre fans should find plenty to enjoy. by James Mudge - BeyondHollywood.com |

Soo Ro is Hysterical then C-C-Cool
For nervous stricken Soo Ro (Hyeon-jung Ko) who suffers panic attacks after nearly drowning at sea, feels at a complete loss when her sister decides to study abroad in Japan, leaving Soo Ro all on her own with her fears. Soo Ro as such a problem with people (not wanting to be drowned by them either) she even as to use her cute phone avatar voice to order food deliveries to her home instead of her own voice, and regularly visits her psychologist to try to overcome her people and drowning fears. The psychologist’s advice? Soo Ro should get out more, visit new places and get herself a great new adventure – with people (and probably water)! After all, she loves crime stories, craves adventure and draws detective illustrations. But when Soo Ro’s sister finally packs her bags and both say tearful airport farewells, Soo Ro’s new adventure begins. After dropping to the floor, losing breath and grasping for her dropped medication at the airport, Soo Ro panicking as sis flies off to Japan, a kindly nun (Kyung Jin) picks up Soo Ro’s dropped pill bottle. Thanking and getting to know the nun in an airport coffee bar, the nun reassures Soo Ro that her life will not be too bad being alone, unlike the nun who giving her vows to God denies herself any contact with a man she loves. But it’s the man’s birthday and the nun wishes to send him a birthday cake, but cannot face him due to her vows. So Soo Ro obliges by proxy, after all the nun was kind to help Soo Ro and offer good advice, to take the nun’s birthday cake to her lover.
But not is all that it seems. Unbeknown to Soo Ro the nun is a courier drug lord called Miss Go (and even gives Soo Ro a box of condoms with suspicious content), and the content of the cake is hard drugs being smuggled between two feuding gang groups. As Soo Ro accepts the cake box (and a condom packet), her every move is monitored by the police and gangsters. One such is Red Shoes (Jin-yu Hae), an undercover policeman disguised as a cool gangster who tails Soo Ro to the rendezvous hotel. But as Soo Ro reaches the hotel room she panics after encountering two dead bodies, then quickly hiding in a wardrobe from other gangsters and the tailing Red Shoes. What more could a neurotic Soo Ro want, than to get herself immersed into a drug gang feud, discover a nun’s ‘lover’ is a murdered gang member and find herself carrying illegal drugs. Well, Soo Ro was supposed to get out more and dive into ‘therapeutic’ adventure! (Continued below) |

Worried Miss Go-Go-Go!
Due to Soo Ro’s involvement she’s then believed by a gang boss to be a new Miss Go, but by her losing a key to the money for the drugs becomes targeted by the gangsters. To make her situation even worse Soo Ro is then arrested by Detetive So (Seok-Ko Chang) and his surveillance team, for Soo Ro inadvertently is smuggling hard drugs. Panicking more than ever (in Knickus Twistus Hysteria mode), Soo Ro passes out in the police interrogation room in stress overload, but later meets Red Shoes, the strikingly cool undercover cop who decides to look after Soo Ro from the two gangster bosses, who want nothing more than Soo Ro dead for stealing their wares. On top of that corrupt Detective So wants to find the lost drug money and it be split with Red Shoes. So both use Soo Ro as a means to a rich end. Soo Ro hysterical? I think so.
Although Soo Ro is quite a panic stricken woman, its not long before you wonder if maybe Soo Ro as more confidence and adventure than anyone else, as she’s thrust into double dealings, espionage and danger and even becoming a sort of ‘My Wife is a Gangster’ type by the finish. But nevertheless the hysteria here is parody and humor (even one of the gangsters as a stammer to appreciate Soo Ro’s world inducing neurosis) with action comedy (a nun with death nail varnish and a condom box), clumsy gangsters, corrupt cops and a big string of Korean actors such as Shin Yang Park, Moon Sik Lee and Hae Jin Hu. Its good seeing all the faces you’ve watched for quite a while in one movie. But although Miss Go isn’t going to set the world alight, it’s a good fun movie, with bits of cute romance and Hyun Jung seems she enjoyed making this lightweight gangster flik. I never really was convinced Soo Ro was severely panic stricken though, and maybe the ‘what’s there to be worried about’ confidence was always lurking under the surface of Soo Ro’s adopted fear of water and drowning. Eventually she smacks the pants of her fears and dons a pair of cool shades and deals with the big boys. By the end it seemed Soo Ro could become a new form of My Wife Is A Gangster (that’s if she gets propositioned by Red Shoes) and the question is will there by a “Miss Go 2”? The movie’s final suggests so, with Soo Ro no longer a nervous Nerris, but a fearless(ish) clumsy sort-it-outta-gal with two hefty bodyguards. This DVD set as a slightly different cover to the one advertised with Soo Ro looking away from the camera. DVD is also region all. |
