YesAsia Editorial Description

Armed with two brushes and four chopsticks, O-Ei (voiced by Anne) and her nutty father can get by anywhere. They don't cook or clean, concentrating only on drawing and painting in their cramped space until it's time to move on elsewhere. O-Ei calls her father Tetsuzo, but you may know him better as Hokusai, the Edo period ukiyo-ye artist who created the iconic The Great Wave off Kanagawa print.

Directed by Hara Keiichi (Colorful), the animated feature film Miss Hokusai, based on Sugiura Hinako's manga Sarusuberi, imagines the life and times of one of Japan's most well-known artists from the unique perspective of Hokusai's daughter, a talented artist in her own right. A smart, headstrong young woman who walked to her own beat in early 19th century Japan, O-Ei assists her father in his work, even going as far as to draw erotica and visit courtesan houses to advance her skills, while also caring for her blind sister and pondering where her heart lies. Produced by Production I.G, the film flows through different episodes of O-Ei and Hokusai's art and lives to create an involving character study filled with intricate themes and imaginative visual flourishes.

This edition includes a 40-page booklet and a bonus DVD.

A portrait of an artist as a young woman Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
'Miss Hokusai' is a beautifully rendered look at the growth of an artist, with the artist in this case being O-Ei, the daughter of the quintessential Japanese artist Hokusai, as she matures into womanhood and the full flowering of her art.

The film uses delicate strokes consisting of her interactions with others to show O-Ei's growth: with a young man who is attracted to her, a young man to whom she is attracted, the oafish artist apprenticed to Hokusai, the stand-offish, abrupt but caring Hokusai himself, and, most of all, with O-Ei's blind and sickly younger sister for whom she shows a tender love. Counter-intuitively, it is primarily through the relationship with the blind sister that the film brings to life the vibrant city of Edo.

The film succeeds in both the human stories it tells and in its depiction of the obsessive drive which bears fruit in artistic genius. I heartily recommend 'Miss Hokusai', but viewers should bear in mind that this likely was not intended as a children's movie. I recommend that parents view this movie first, before they decide whether to share it with their children.
