YesAsia Editorial Description

Aragaki Yui and Eita partner up for table tennis in Mixed Doubles (a.k.a. Mix.), the second feature film collaboration by Legal High series director Ishikawa Junichi and screenwriter Kosawa Ryota after April Fools. An all-star supporting cast that includes Hirosue Ryoko, Aoi Yu, Maki Yoko, Seto Koji, Nagano Mei, Sano Hayato, Endo Kenichi, Kohinata Fumiyo and Namase Katsuhisa join in the ping-pong fun for the ragtag inspirational sports comedy.

At a young age, Tomita Tamako (Aragaki Yui) was strictly trained and groomed by her mother to become a table tennis prodigy. After her mother's death, she returned to an ordinary life. She passed her youth normally, and now goes to work normally at a company. Tamako happily dates Akihiko (Seto Koji), the ace of her company's table tennis club, until he dumps her for the club's new joiner Airi (Nagano Mei). Feeling like she's hit rock bottom, Tamako escapes back to her hometown, only to find that the table tennis club formerly managed by her late mother has fallen into neglect and deficit. The vibrant club of her past is no more. Motivated by Akihiko and Airi's happy appearances, Tamako decides she must revive the run-down club and beat her ex-boyfriend! Taking up her paddle again, she pairs up with new club member Hisashi (Eita), a downtrodden ex-boxer and table tennis newbie whose wife has left him. Along with the motley crew of club players, they set out to compete in the National Table Tennis Championships!

For the love of ping pong
Table tennis fills the emptiness in your heart in the lively yet low-key sports film Mixed Doubles. The sports romantic comedy is the second feature film by TV director Ishikawa Junichi, who has helmed series like Strawberry Night, The After-Dinner Mysteries, Ninkyo Helper and, most notably, Legal High. Like with his first film April Fools, Ishikawa works with Legal High writer Kosawa Ryota, and this time Legal High star Aragaki Yui is also onboard for the star-studded ensemble.

Mixed Doubles' original story follows the familiar highs and lows of the sports film formula. Aragaki charms as always as heroine Tamako, a former ping pong prodigy who gave up the sport after her mother (an amusingly intimidating Maki Yoko) passed away. She settled into the normal life of a trend-following school girl and then an everyday office worker. Ping pong is out of her sight and mind until she falls for the princely ace (Seto Koji) of the table tennis team sponsored by her company. Tamako keeps her own competitive past a secret from her boyfriend, but he eventually cheats on her with his mixed doubles partner (Nagano Mei). Angry and miserable, Tamako quits Tokyo and moves back to her hometown where she finds reluctant refuge at her mother's old and failing ping pong club. To get back at her ex, Tamako picks up the sport again and resolves to lead the ragtag club to the national championship. She partners with Eita as new guy in town Hisashi, a short-tempered former boxer who made a mess of his marriage.

Per genre expectations, the team of idiosyncratic underdogs train and grow together but nearly fall apart over personal issues. Our grouchy heroine experiences both triumphs and setbacks before she learns to play for the right reasons. Hints of romance gradually form between bickering partners Tamako and Hisashi until the return of their exes throw their nascent relationship and game off balance. Nothing special or surprising happens in Mixed Doubles, but those looking for a Japanese zero-to-hero sports comedy will not be disappointed as it ably delivers the lovable qualities and characters of the genre.

In particular, Mixed Doubles gets good mileage out of its supporting players whose individual struggles are concise but compelling. Hirosue Ryoko is especially engaging as Tamako's childhood friend and teammate Yayoi, a doctor's wife who just isn't prim and proper enough to fulfill her trophy wife duties. The sense of purpose, escape and fighting spirit that ping pong gives her in contrast to mundane domestic and social pressures is as realistic a reason as any movie could provide for taking up a recreational sport. Endo Kenichi and Tanaka Misako's older couple that pick up ping pong for their own touching reason and Sano Hayato's truant introverted teen who doesn't fit in elsewhere also carry simple but acutely relatable backstories.

In contrast to ping pong-themed sports comedies like Ping Pong and Balls of Fury, Mixed Doubles does not take the over-the-top route with its gameplay sequences. Competition is difficult and intense, but mostly because the sport means a lot to the characters, and not because they're all that great at it. Even the characters who are supposed to be prodigies aren't exactly leaping around or dropping trick shots. While this may be less entertaining, it makes the film feel a lot closer to reality, adding to the relatability of the sport and the congenial small-town slice-of-life atmosphere of Mixed Doubles. You may want to pick up a paddle yourself after watching this film.
