December 25, 2013 Refreshed and RefreshingI am a fan of Johnnie To and I love Eye in the Sky - watched it twice. It was a clever, gritty and well-paced movie that had me glued to the screen. For this reason, I had eagerly anticipated the DVD for Cold Eyes. The Korean version, updated with all the new technology, was edgy, fast-paced and sleek. In fact, I felt as if I was watching a new movie instead of a re-make. The cameo appearance by Simon Yam was such a classic moment for fans of the Hong Kong movie. Cold Eyes was definitely a worthwhile buy. Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -
Good Morning President (2009) (DVD) (US Version)

January 21, 2013 Presidents are humans and leadersGood Morning President tells the story of how three Presidents in South Korea deal with the issues - mostly personal - that confront them. It does so simply, without overly dramatises or romantises the characters involved. Yet as leaders, they were able to do the "right" thing and make the "right" decisions based on the basic values in life. The light-hearted treatment is well done to give the characters that human touch without trivalising the story. The result - a highly watchable movie. Did you find this review helpful? July 8, 2012 A Timeless MovieUnlike the other Wong Kar Wai's movies, famed for their slow and convoluted plots, Chungking Express is refreshingly simple, which makes the movie watchable at any time of the day. Yet it does not lose any of the raw urban emotions that the characters felt and experienced. For some reason, I had only watched the second story with Tony Leung and Faye Wong previously - which had me humming California Dreaming for days. I saw the complete movie for the first time today, and totally get the haplessness felt by a very young Takeshi Kaneshiro. One can't really tell that the movie is 18 years old but the pager and the public phone did bring back feelings of nostalgia. Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -
Shanghai Grand (DVD) (Hong Kong Version)

July 2, 2012 An epic that wasn't quite soMaybe it's because I am watching this 1996 movie for the first time and only in 2012. It's a movie that tried to do too much in a short span of time: political struggles, romantic love, triad gang fights and the sanctity of brotherhood. So much so that it feels like many fleeting moments strung together to form a story. What stood out for me is the brotherhood between the two male leads, with the easy chemistry between Leslie Cheung and Andy Lau, and a compelling performance by Leslie Cheung. But it feels incredulous to watch Andy Lau's character grow to become a formidable gang leader and yet at the same time be naively smitten like a boy from a junior high school. Still, Shanghai Grand is watchable and I would recommend the movie. Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -

July 2, 2012 For that lazy summer feelingI confess I watched this movie because of Leslie Cheung. But those anticipating a full blown romantic love story between Leslie and Faye Wong will be disappointed. There were hints of romance but the end leaves you wishing for more. But then again, it is what makes this movie quirky. The other plot, that of plotting a heist, turned out unexpectedly funny. Efforts by both Leslie and Tony Leong to outdo and outwit each other were hilarious, with the former being almost deadpan and the latter incredibly dumb. And Okinawa was beautifully shot, so much so that it made me want to visit this southern part of Japan and hang out there as a beach bum. An enjoyable movie for a lazy Sunday. March 22, 2008 A Great Love StoryThe local TV station had shown the two movies on many occasions but I have never watched them in full. The two scenes - one from each of the movies -that were the most memorable was when Stephen Chow's character tried to travel back in time to save his loved one; and the other was the final scene where Stephen Chow's and Athena Zhu's characters stood on the high wall in a "face-off".
I finally watched the two movies in full today and although the movies are more than 10 years old (and if one can look past the Stephen Chow's slapstick humour - you either love it or you hate it), I felt that the movies have withstood the test of time. It is a great story about love and destiny, and the most original twist to the Journey to the West. I am glad I bought the DVD.Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -
Happy Together (DVD) (Taiwan version)

April 30, 2006 What it means to be happy?A good movie is one that tells a good story and/or shed insight into the meaning of life.
Happy Together is a story about a couple - how one left the other person, breaking the latter's heart; how they got back together and how the same person wanted to leave and the other person tried in vain to do everything to keep former by his side.
It is a story about how a heartbroken man recover from a failed relationship. Like any heartbroken person, it takes time, new people and new places to get over a relationship.
It is a story about how a person who tried to get away for greater adventure never found it because he couldn't get away from himself and how one can only truly move on if one make the first step to change yourself and step out.
It is a story about how ironically one may not be happy when you are together with the person you love but how you do not need to be with the another to feel the friendship and love from him/her and be blessed and happy about it.
It is a story about how to be happy.
Happy Together is a brilliant movie.Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -

April 25, 2006 Putting life in perspectiveDespite earlier reviews - that the movie was slow and the plot confusing - when it was first released, I totally get the story. Perhaps it is only after a certain age and with some life experience can one fully realise how one cannot escape from the past and yet one can never go back to what was before. While struggling to find ourselves again, we miss or lost the moment that is in the present, which is what the movie successfully conveyed. Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -

April 12, 2006 Coming of Age in HellThe story is bleak. A group of teenagers caught in a vicious cycle of bullying. The only way out was a tragic end. I felt that the pace and mood of the story could be better controlled and tightened. Instead, it was sporadic and uneven, with a mish mash of hi-tech instant messaging, teenage drama and social documentary. I didn't enjoy it as much. Did you find this review helpful? March 30, 2006 Simple and meaningfulThe seemingly simplicity of this movie has an hypnotic effect so much so that when it ended, it left me wondering if that was it. Upon reflection, I couldn't help but be cheered by the main lead's simple motivation and the immense happiness she derived from it. One can't help and think that life is not just about big dreams but it is the simple things that keep people going especially leading a highly stressful urban lifestyle. A simple, beautiful and meaningful movie. Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This)
