YesAsia Editorial Description
A year later, One takes the romantic comedy to the big screen with the Moteki movie! Making his directorial debut, One creates an original story that continues from where the manga left off. Moriyama is back as pop culture geek Yukiyo, and he has entered yet another "moteki" involving four beautiful women! This time, the objects of Yukiyo's affections are played by Naka Riisa (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time), Maki Yoko (SP), Aso Kumiko (Instant Swamp), and Nagasawa Masami (in an award-winning performance). Carrying the series' inventive visual touches and eclectic J-pop soundtrack over to the film version, One created a surprise box office hit as hip, young fans of the series flocked to the cinemas to see Yukiyo's new romantic exploits!
Former temp worker Yukiyo (Moriyama Mirai) is now 30, poor, and still single. However, things are looking up as he scores a new job as a writer at an Internet pop culture news portal. He has also met a new friend on Twitter, who turns out to be cute music writer Miyuki (Nagasawa Masami). Unfortunately, Yukiyo finds out that Miyuki also has a longtime live-in boyfriend, sending him to a new emotional abyss. Lucky for Yukiyo, he also has three new girls by his side - Miyuki's friend Rumiko (Aso Kumiko), talkative hostess Ai (Naka Riisa), and his constantly angry co-worker Matoko (Maki Yoko). Will Yukiyo finally be able to find the one in his new "moteki"?
Deluxe Edition includes making of, deleted scenes, the "Livehouse Moteki" concert, audio commentaries, stage events, trailers, and a shooting diary written by One Hitoshi.

Style over substance
When watching "Love Strikes" for the first time, I was smitten by the giddy energy of its visual style and J-Pop soundtrack. Upon second viewing, the film's threadbare storytelling proved a detriment. While based upon a manga and TV series, familiarity with those sources is unnecessary to follow the movie's tale.
Fujimoto Yukiyo (Moriyama Mirai) is a 31 year old geek hired to report on pop culture for a webzine. Relentlessly teased by officemates about his sexual inexperience, Yukiyo is stunned when Miyuki (Nagasawa Masami), a pretty reporter for a rival 'zine, wishes to befriend him. In the shallow sexual economics of this film, friendship immediately implies intimacy. However, when Yukiyo learns that Miyuki is shacking up with another man, he promptly seeks solace in the bed of Miyuki's best friend Rumiko (Aso Kumiko). Rumiko assumes that she now has established a meaningful relationship with Yukiyo, but Yukiyo flees that commitment. (Why exactly were these beautiful women falling for this tongue-tied nerd? The film doesn't really attempt an explanation.) While the behavior of all of the film's principal characters at every turn is morally obtuse, the filmmakers want us to understand that these really are good folks who are just having a little trouble sorting out their lives. Miyuki, for example, is an adulteress flirting with another man, yet when she sheds a few tears, we are given to understand we shouldn't hold any of this against her because she's not altogether happy with these circumstances. It is a testimony to Nagasawa Masami's considerable charm that she almost pulls this off. While one wonders whether writer/director One Hitoshi has any understanding of what comprises real love, it is the relentless visual innovation of "Love Strikes", coupled with its many catchy pop tunes that leaves the lasting impression. Watching geeky Yukiyo appear in imaginary music videos that mirror his moods never fails to amuse. The film's conclusion is thoroughly unconvincing, but the giddy ride to that destination is worth a look. |
