可汗，因為不擅表達言行舉止也異於常人，因此從小就遭到歧視並遭受同學的霸凌，幸好他有個堅強且滿腹愛心、耐心拉拔他長大的單親媽媽，不僅教導他要做自己還要找到屬於自己的幸福。在母親過世後，可汗隨著弟弟扎吉爾移民到美國，在心理學家弟媳哈西娜的觀察下，這個總是獲得母親全心注意的哥哥，原來是亞斯伯格症(自閉症之一)的患者，扎吉爾因此盡釋前嫌教導哥哥工作技能，而可汗生性誠實因此推銷產品前都親身試驗過，因為這樣的努力和善良彌補先天的不足，在事業上小有成就，也獲得心愛女性曼蒂拉的芳心。
好景不常，由於911悲劇的發生，讓冠有「可汗」這個穆斯林姓氏得人遭受到誤解，讓他們從此背上了恐怖份子的罪名，在美國的穆斯林們頻頻遭受到不明攻擊，人人心生恐懼因而偽裝起自己、否定自己的身份，可汗的繼子撒米爾也因此遭受到同學們的霸凌致死。曼蒂拉面臨喪子的沉重打擊而怪罪於「可汗」這個姓，並要可汗告訴美國總統「我的名字叫可汗，我不是恐怖份子」，為了妻子的這句話，他開始了一段漫長的旅途………。
