Writer-director Kawawada Emma, who assisted on Kore-eda Hirokazu's The Third Murder, makes her feature debut with My Small Land. Selected for the Generation Kplus sidebar of the 2022 Berlin International Film Festival, the sensitive drama follows the life of a teenaged Kurdish girl in Japan. VIVI model Arashi Lina makes her film debut in My Small Land which also co-stars Japan Academy Prize Best Newcomer winner Okudaira Daiken from Mother. The film's production crew includes Drive My Car's cinematographer Shinomiya Hidetoshi and production designer Seo Hyeon Seon.
17-year-old Kurdish girl Sarya (Arashi Lina) grew up in Japan from a young age. When her family's application for refugee status is rejected, her daily life completely changes.
