The classic Chinese folk tale of the Cowherd and the Weaving Maiden comes to television in the 2008 CCTV drama Niu Lang and Zhi Nu. Also recently dramatized in the 2007 TVB drama The Legend of Love, this famous folk tale is about the star-crossed love between a deity and a man. Weaving maiden Zhi Nu comes to the mortal realm and falls in love with cowherd Niu Lang. Facing many trials together, they seal their love in marriage, but are eventually eternally separated by the heavens. Every year on the seventh day of the seventh month on the lunar calendar - Chinese Valentine's Day - magpies form a bridge in the celestial skies so that Niu Lang and Zhi Nu can meet each other one day a year. In a refreshing new pairing, the drama's eponymous lovers are played by popular Taiwan actress Ady An (Chinese Paladin) and Olympic diver-turned-actor Tian Liang in his drama debut.

玉皇天帝和王母有三個女兒，大女兒斯冰，二女兒旱拔，三女兒絲音。因為不小心將成就姐姐斯冰與火神祝融大婚的「問心果」遺落人間，織女絲音來到了「天盡頭」，在這裡，她遇見了她一生的愛人牛郎。為了牛郎，織女選擇留在了人間，她將織絲的技術傳到了人間，也用她的聰慧化解了暗戀牛郎的鳳凰的刁難。但斯冰一直認為是織女奪走問心果而毀掉了她的幸福，憤怒的斯冰在王母的支持下，唆使灶王和丈夫祝融多次危害人間，並誘導人們將矛頭對準織女。面對村民的誤會和憤怒，無家可歸的織女在水神的兒子夏炎的幫助下解救了天旱。鄉民被織女所感動，重新接納了她，織女也回到了牛郎身邊。一波未平又起一波，祝融的死掀起了天庭大戰，織女身世也因此浮出水面，原來她是玉帝和西天王愛妃瑤姬的私生女。王母暴怒，逼織女與玉帝斷絕關係，並下了如生兒女三歲將死的惡毒咒語…。
