YesAsia Editorial Description

History doesn't repeat itself, but it often rhymes.

One of the most talked-about Hong Kong films of 2018, No. 1 Chung Ying Street links the city's rocky past and uncertain future by looking back at the leftist riots of 1967. Directed by Derek Chiu (The Road Less Traveled), the B&W independent film is divided into two parts set in 1967 and 2019. Starring Fish Liew (Sisterhood), Neo Yau (She Remembers, He Forgets) and Siuyeah Lo, the drama intertwines two restless generations and two contentious stories on No. 1 Chung Ying Street.

In 1967, four young people become involved in the leftist protests against the British colonial government that have gripped Hong Kong in violence and unrest. In 2019, three young activists cross paths with an old man who once participated in the 1967 riots. Both segments are centered in the town of Sha Tau Kok near the border with mainland China.

Product Information

“History doesn’t repeat itself, but it often rhymes”, said Mark Twain. Two stories representing two eras took place on Chung Ying Street of Sha Tau Kok, a restricted area crisscrossing the boundary between Hong Kong and China. In 1967, the leftist riots broke out in Hong Kong. The fate of 4 youngsters was driven by the wrestling between the pro-communist left and the British colonial government. In the year of 2019 falling in the post-Umbrella Movement era, 3 youngsters and an old man who had gone through the “1967 Riots” were compelled to face the choices and destinies brought about by capitalism and China-Hong Kong conflict. The past and future of Hong Kong weave into a song of life.
