文雄（鍾鎮濤飾）因看不慣姐夫欺負姐姐，氣憤之下打傷姐夫，被判刑三年，獄中與賴老頭（葛香亭飾）學會木雕手藝，提前假釋的文雄成為木雕師傅賴老頭的得力助手，文雄與老師傅之啞巴女兒阿秀（林鳳嬌飾）彼此關懷，情愛滋長。賴老頭看在眼裡樂在心理。此時文雄從前女友月華（李烈飾）出現，賴老頭頗不諒解，逐他出門，免得女兒上當。鎮上藝品店周小開（江明飾）與賴老頭獄中友郭金發均對阿秀有非份之想，幸而在其對阿秀動手時，均被文雄所救。幾經波折與誤會，文雄與阿秀感情更深，而賴老頭也認清了文雄的為人，風雨過去小城歸於平靜。
