實行「知識就是力量」(Knowledge is Power Program,簡稱KIPP)體系思維的各個學校,都強烈地認同金恩博士(Martin Luther King Jr.)的話,他說:「只有智力是不夠的,智力加上品格──這是教育真正的目標。」因此,KIPP的學校體系有意識地培養學生品格作為學術卓越的關鍵要素,他們採用下列的結構框架:

1.    熱情(Zest):以振奮、充滿能量來接近生活;感覺精神抖擻又充滿活力。
例證指標:積極參與;表現出熱情;鼓舞他人。

2.    自制(Self-Control):調節個人的感受及行為,表現自律。
例證指標:在上課前做好準備;專心一致而不分心;保持冷靜即使在面對批評或其他令人觸怒的情況;控制脾氣。

3.    感恩(Gratitude):覺察到並感謝自己所擁有的種種機會,和未來美好事物發生的可能。
例證指標:肯定其他人的付出;表現出對他人的感謝之意;讚賞及/或對他/她所擁有的機會表示感謝。

4.    好奇(Curiosity):對體驗和學習新事物感興趣,因為其本身的緣故;發現事物令人著迷的一面。

5.    樂觀(Optimism):對未來懷抱最好的期許,並努力地加以實現。

6.    毅力(Grit):做事情有始有終;不論面對何種障礙也要完成一件事;結合堅持和韌性。
例證指標:完成自己所開始的任何事情;即使在歷經失敗之後仍努力嘗試;儘管面對令人分心的事物,但仍能專注地獨立工作。

7.    社交智商(Social Intelligence):瞭解他人和自己的動機和感受;在較大群體或較小群體中都有明辨事理的能力。
例證指標:面對與他人發生的衝突也能夠找到解決方案;尊重他人的感受;知道接納包容他人的時間點和方法。

綜合以上所述,社會和情緒技能需要以品格為指導準則;而品格則需要以技能來體現。由於品格是指導方針(guideline)而不是操作說明(instruction),所以重點是要反思我們如何將這些品格/特質付諸行動,以進一步磨練我們對其細微差別的理解。
