Professional Review of "O.T. Ghost Overtime (DVD) (Thailand Version)"

November 4, 2015

This professional review refers to O.T. Ghost Overtime (Blu-ray) (English Subtitled) (Hong Kong Version)
With horror portmanteau pieces continuing to go down well with Thai audiences, expanding some of the more popular shorts into features was always going to be a natural next move. A big genre hit back in 2012, the three-part 3AM was one of the best received anthologies, with many viewers enjoying director Isara Nadee's O.T. segment the most, a ghoulish comedy of errors revolving around a couple of prankster bosses who got their kicks out of terrifying their employees. Nadee, who also helmed the high altitude haunter Dark Flight, returns with O.T. Ghost Overtime, picking up where the first instalment left off and again following Ray MacDonald and Shahkrit Yamnarm as they get up to more creepy shenanigans.

MacDonald and Yamnarm play Tee and Karan, who despite having barely survived their misadventures in O.T. are still up to their old tricks, tormenting the staff at their company, joined by co-conspirator Badin (Thai superstar Ananda Everingham). Having run into severe financial difficulties (probably since they don't appear to actually do any work), the three reluctantly agree to take on a strange job organising a wedding for the rich An (Akarat Nimitchai) and his bride-to-be Tarn (Pimpawee Kograbin), which just happens to be in one of the country's most haunted hotels. Soon enough the fake ghosts and phony corpses are piling up, though it gradually starts to seem like there might be something genuinely supernatural at work.

Obviously for a full-length film like O.T. Ghost Overtime based on a short, the main challenge is to stay faithful to the material while not coming across simply as an over-stretched re-tread. Isara Nadee attempts this by ditching the office location (and indeed the whole overtime concept) pretty quickly, moving things to the new haunted hotel setting and introducing his new set of characters. Though the film is certainly overlong at an hour and forty minutes, this works well enough, at least for those viewers willing to accept that it's not really a horror in the strictest sense, and in particular for those who don't mind spending most of the running time being manipulated and tricked along with the cast. As with the original short, most of the tension and surprises come from trying to guess which apparitions and deaths are real and which are daft tomfoolery, and the film gets plenty of mileage out of setting up and dashing expectations. The mix of slapstick gags and jump shocks is mostly effective, and Nadee works in some fairly creative set pieces, giving the film the feel of an old school Hong Kong style slice of spooky nonsense.

Where O.T. Ghost Overtime falls down somewhat is through its characters, none of whom are actually likeable or sympathetic, with Tee, Karan and Badin all being mean-spirited and immature, each only defined by their love of playing often nasty jokes on the innocent for cheap laughs. Though Ray MacDonald. Shahkrit Yamnarm and Ananda Everingham do their best to add a little charisma to their roles, they're hindered by the fact that their protagonists are basically similar blanks, and it's hard to care about them or their antics beyond wondering which of them is the real Machiavellian mastermind. This undermines what should have been a jovial atmosphere, and quite understandably some viewers will find it hard to enjoy being fooled by characters that they actively dislike.

O.T. Ghost Overtime is inevitably going to be divisive for audiences, though for those who buy into its pranking premise there's a fair amount of fun to be had. Competently handled by Isara Nadee, it's another solid Thai genre film, albeit one which would have benefitted from more appealing characters and a few less moments of chicanery.
