The younger team of Miyazaki Hayao's Studio Ghibli presents the delightful animated feature Ocean Waves, based on Himuro Saeko's novel. Director Mochizuki Tomomi (Here is Greenwood) delivers a nostalgic coming-of-age story that revolves around a simple premise of boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, and boy gets girl. Flooded with memories of the past, the story centers on Taku, a university undergraduate who travels from Tokyo to his rural hometown of Kochi to attend his high-school reunion. Taku takes the audience back in time to his high school years when he first met Rikako, a transfer from the urban Tokyo.
Taku befriendles the pretty and somewhat reclusive Rikako but her snobbish big city attitude drives him nuts, and the two always find themselves bickering with one another. But beneath his tough surface, Taku begins to develop feelings for this sassy girl - though he keeps them buried for the sake of his friend Matsuno who has a major crush on Rikako. A beautiful portrayal of youth and its innocence, Ocean Waves charms with beautiful, translucent watercolor images and a pleasant soundtrack, delivering a genuine and warm feeling along the way.

Not as I expected...
| Don't get me wrong, but this movie was a disaster in its making. All of the scenery, music, and characters were lovely and enticing, but the factors for me were the length of the movie and the scutiny the movie could have taken. First, I thought the movie was very very short, thus I couldn't get to fully enjoy the movie as I would've liked. Second, there were many round characters I wanted to get to know better, but sadly the movie was a bit...one-sided. In conclusion, I would have liked if the movie were a bit longer and full.. other than that, it was fairly decent... |

Umi Ga Kikoeru
| I am glad that I picked this title up. Unlike other Ghibli features, this one is 100% non-fantasy. It's as raw as it can get. I can totally relate to Rikako, the main female character who is also from Tokyo like me. Experience friendship and romance like you have never been before. This title bring back lots of warm memories. I wish I can live my high school days again! |

Excellent JapAnime

This is the best in Ghibli animes for me. It recalls me my high school days in Japan very much. It is very real story, not fantasy such as Nausicaa, of typical Japanese high school age. I bet as Japanese. So if you are interested in high school life in Japan, you must watch it. It will be very interesting experience for JapAnime funs to know Japanese high school life.
I believe this movie is also interesting for other watchers thanks to it's well prepared story as well as other Ghibli animes. |

A hidden Ghibli gem!!
| This is not one of the more well-known Ghibli movies, but it is just as good all the same. I loved it, it's a heart-warming romance story that actually isn't boring. The DVD is also great too. It comes with excellent English subtitles, which are flawless. The picture transfers perfectly, and you get lots of great extra features (although not subtitled). A great buy!! |
