YesAsia Editorial Description

There are hundreds of movies about Wong Fei Hung, but the ones that have gained the highest worldwide reputation have to be Hong Kong auteur Tsui Hark's Once Upon a Time in China series made in the 1990s. Embodying the charisma, righteousness, and martial arts prowess of the historical Chinese kung fu hero, action superstar Jet Li has arguably owned the role, and his portrayal of the legendary figure has set a new standard against which future Wong Fei Hung actors be measured. The writer-director and star's golden first film in 1991 was such a great critical and commercial triumph, it spawned the even more successful sequel (1992) and the worthy third installment (1993) to complete a landmark martial arts trilogy that is required viewing for any action film fans.

Co-starring Max Mok, Rosamund Kwan, Lau Shun, and kung fu wonder Xiong Xinxin, Once Upon a Time in China III's exhilarating fight scenes unfold against the backdrop of a Lion Dance competition (essentially a martial arts contest) organized by the head minister on the Empress Dowager's order. Master Wong Fei Hung (Jet Li) is in the capital city visiting his father, and he only reluctantly enters the competition when local gang lord Chiu is causing chaos amidst the rivaling martial arts schools. Chiu sends his kung fu hitman, Clubfoot (Xiong Xinxin), to challenge Master Wong. Meanwhile, Wong has to ward off the advances of the Russian admirer made to his lover Thirteen Aunt (Rosamund Kwan), who inadvertently uncovers a sinister plot to assassinate the head minister during the Lion Dance competition.

Professional Review of "Once Upon A Time In China III (1993) (Blu-ray) (4K Ultra-HD Remastered Collection) (Hong Kong Version)"

April 7, 2011

This professional review refers to Once Upon A Time In China III (1993)(Blu-ray) (Hong Kong Version)
In China, a lion dance is necessary at the start of any business enterprise in order to ensure an auspicious beginning. At the beginning of Jet Li's HKSAR career, director Tsui Hark gives him a lion dance film to end all lion dance films in this, the third installment of the Once Upon a Time in China series. The last word on period pageantry, it's also the installment in which Fei-hung's relationship with his Aunt Yee (Rosamund Kwan, at her most dewey) comes to the fore. Fei-hung, Yee, and servant Leung Foon (Max Mok) travel to Peking to ask Fei-hung's dad (Aunt Yee's brother) for permission for the two of them to get married.

In the meantime, the Empress Dowager and President Li stage a Lion Dance competition among all the martial arts schools, hoping to throw a little fear into the foreigners crawling all over town. Their particular concern is a gang of Russian diplomats who seem to be up to something. One of them, Tomansky, is an old flame of Aunt Yee's from England and he's barely bumped into her again before he's pitching woo once more. Meanwhile, Chiu Tin-bai's martial arts school is attempting to cripple and maim all the other contestants in the Lion Dance Competition, including Fei-hung's dad, Wong Kei-ying. And it soon becomes clear that what those Russians are up to is the assasination of President Li. Whoops!

The whole movie has a loosey-goosey "we're on a vacation" feel, and it concerns itself as much with wedding plans as lion dances. Fei-hung's jealousy stirred up by the sideburned Tomansky, he's much more aggressive and proactive than he was in the first two OUTATIC films. But his aggression is nothing compared to that of Xiong Xin-xin, who makes his speaking debut playing Chiu Tin-bai's henchman, Clubfoot. Xiong was Jet Li's stunt double, and Priest Kung in OUATIC 2, and here he gives a possesed performance, as if every one of his joints were on springs, and he very nearly steals the show.

Due to salary problems with Golden Harvest, Jet Li made this his last Once Upon a Time in China movie, and his last film for Tsui's Film Workshop. The Fred Astaire of fighting was replaced by Chiu Man-cheuk and the series kept on going, but nothing will ever replicate the magic of these first three movies which will always rank as true high points of the period martial arts film.

Yet another chapter in the story of Huang Fei-Hong (Li). This time, Fei-Hong travels with his sidekick Fu (Mok) and girlfriend Aunt Yee (Kwan) to Bejing to visit his father's medicine shop. The local government has decided to hold a "lion dance" competition to bolster the populace's kung-fu skills in the hope of getting rid of the growing foreign influence. This sets off a gang war as the Triads fight each other for the right to be in the competition. One Triad in particular, a kung-fu master known as Clubfoot (Hung) seems set on also beating Fei-Hong in the process. Things turn even uglier when Aunt Yee uncovers a plot to assassinate the president during the lion dance. Once again, it's up to Fei-Hong to save the day.

The plot in Once 3 is a bit more linear than the previous movies and, as such, it may be a better movie for newbies in the genre, though some knowledge of Chinese history would still be helpful in following the political twists and turns. Visually, the film looks phenomenal and there's tons of high-flying wire-fu action. My only real complaint with the film is there's a lack of one-on-one fighting. The huge lion dances/gang fights are great, but there's nothing in the movie to match the intensity of the Jet Li/Donnie Yen battle in Once 2. The ending is also unbelievably cheesy, with Li delivering a speech that needlessly hammers in some symbolism. Overall, though, Once 3 is a fine movie and a good addition to the series.

Lion dances, scheming Russkis, and a proposal Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"Once Upon a Time In China 3" benefits from telling a simpler story than the tales spun in its two predecessors. It also boasts a balanced blend of action, romance, and humor. Wong Fei Hung (Jet Li), his lady love Aunt Yee (Rosamund Kwan) and his student Leung Foon (Max Mok) come to Beijing to visit Wong's father's pharmaceutical business. Wong also hopes to persuade his father to accept his engagement to Aunt Yee. However, all is not well in Beijing.

The Dowager Empress has called for a lion dance tournament and an evil oil company owner wants to ensure that his lion dance team will win the tournament. He seeks to intimidate rival teams from participating. In addition, Aunt Yee runs into a Russian diplomat with whom she attended university. The diplomat has long hoped to make Yee his bride (and also harbors a darker plan). Wong soon finds himself enmeshed in a war of battling lion dance teams, a tussle to retain the affections of his beloved Aunt, and an even greater struggle that threatens China's government.

Once again Jet Li is terrific, carrying off the action, the comedy, and the romance with panache. Doe-eyed Rosamund Kwan is a delight and Max Mok really blossoms in his comedic role. Xiong Xin Xin nearly steals the show as Club Foot, an astonishingly quick and powerful martial artist who serves as the top enforcer for theoil company owner. While some of his moves certainly are aided by wirework, they nonetheless are eye-poppingly acrobatic and creative. For me, the least involving parts of the movie are the big lion dance combats; the lion costumes too often mask the martial arts moves being made and create on-screen chaos. Nonetheless, there is plenty here to enjoy. I recommend "Once Upon a Time In China 3" highly.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
As ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA 3 was made I was stunned at the music and the action. The movie starts off as a Lion Head dance such as like ONCE UPON A IN CHINA 1 when hundreds of men walked to a sunrise of a beach. As after the dance Aunt Yee(Rosamund Kwan)&Wong Fei Hung(Jet Li)moved to Canton to visit Wong's dad. Fu(Max Mox Siu Chueng) was acttacked by gangsters.
Something enormus happends Wong came to a rescue to help. Wong tauoght the leader a lesson by doing the split in the air as I thuoght It's impossible to do that. As Wong dad was passing to his medicine factory a group of men called Chiu Thei-Bai(bad guys)walked in as well. They ordered them to jion them on their team but they refused.
All that talking lead to a fight a dangerious fight. When Chiu Thei-Bai called out Club Foot(Xiong XinXin) I was amazed. Club Foot kicked their asses like nothing. While a deparate fight the bad guys walked away throwing Wong's dad Lion Heads away. As Wong arrived Wong cured him back to health. So I'm tired of telling this whole story why won't you buy and see it.

Not a great film from the series Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
Although I am a huge fan of Jet Li and the Huang Fei Hung series, I still think that this film is probably the worst one that Jet Li has worked on from the popular series as it did have a weak storyline and the action was quite limited.
