YesAsia Editorial Description

Shiraishi Kazuya (Sea of Revival) delves into the precious but sometimes cruel bond that is family in the human drama One Night. The film is based on the same-titled stage production by the Kuwabara Yuko-led theater company Kakuta. Tanaka Yuko, Satoh Takeru (Rurouni Kenshin), Suzuki Ryohei (A Forest of Wool and Steel) and Matsuoka Mayu (Shoplifters) form a family that was shattered after a case that happened 15 years ago.

One rainy night, Koharu (Tanaka Yuko) killed her husband. Only then can her three children be happy, she believed. Fifteen years later, she reunites with her children – oldest son Hiroki (Suzuki Ryohei), second son Yuji (Satoh Takeru) and daughter Sonoko (Matsuoka Mayu) – who parted ways and grew up separately into adults whose wounds never healed. For this family, time stopped 15 years ago. What lies ahead for them now that they finally meet again?

Professional Review of "One Night (2019) (Blu-ray) (English Subtitled) (Hong Kong Version)"

October 30, 2020

With films like Twisted Justice, Birds Without Names and The Blood of Wolves under his belt, director Shiraishi Kazuya has shown a talent in telling stories about the psychology of sinners and extreme justice. His latest film, One Night, doesn't stray from that interest. Adapted from a play by Kuwabara Yuko, the dark family drama shows how one mother's extreme act to protect her children ends up destroying their lives. Playing like a thematic continuation of his previous film Sea of Revival, about a gambling addict's desperate attempt to overcome his demons and restart his life in a countryside town, Shiraishi's latest is another gritty drama about difficult moral issues that is buoyed by a strong cast.

One rainy night, Koharu Inamura (Tanaka Yuko) kills her husband by running him over at the parking lot of the family's taxi company. He had been physically abusive to their three teenage children for years, and Koharu decided that killing him would free them from the shackles of his brutality.

But the freedom that Koharu wanted for her children never quite came to fruition. The kids ended up being shunned and bullied by the public for being the children of a murderer, and the scars have damaged them for life. Sonoko (Matsuoka Mayu) is now an alcoholic bar hostess; Yuji (Sato Takeru) has become a tabloid writer who plans to sell his own family out by writing a sensational tell-all book; and Daiki (Suzuki Ryohei) is a stuttering mess who bottles up his emotions, to the frustration of his soon-to-be estranged wife. The children's traumas resurface when Koharu returns to the family home 15 years after turning herself into the police. The staff of the taxi company, now run by Koharu's nephew, welcomes her back with open arms, but her children don't quite feel the same.

Considering its source material, it's no surprise that much of the film is set in the family home and the taxi company office. Shiraishi's all-star cast has plenty to chew on as each main character's psychological trauma and long-held resentments are brought back to the surface. In his darkest role yet, Sato (Rurouni Kenshin series) adapts himself well as the jaded, resentful middle child. Suzuki is particularly strong as the timid eldest son who shows that he has taken up the worst aspects of his late father in one shocking scene. As the shunned murderer who insists that she did the right thing, Tanaka Yuko is also quietly brilliant in channeling Koharu's tenacity and guilt in heartbreaking ways.

One Night uses the story of a dysfunctional family reunion to ask big questions about the price of "necessary evil" and whether sinners can ever be free of their sins (the latter is solidified by a subplot involving a newly hired taxi driver with a dark past). The flashbacks of the Inamura children being abused are brutal enough to convince us that Koharu did the right thing, but the film also wonders whether the resulting trauma for the children is worth the price. The script by longtime collaborator Izumi Takahashi (The Devil's Path, Sunny/32) doesn't wrap up these questions in a wholly satisfying manner, but Shiraishi gives the story a raw edge that lifts this film above other stories in the genre. Though the road to the film's hopeful ending can be emotionally heavy at times, One Night is worth seeing for its stellar cast, and Shiraishi once again shows himself to be one of Japan's most fiercely uncompromising filmmakers.
