RBW의 첫 보이그룹 원어스(ONEUS)의 데뷔앨범 [LIGHT US]가 1월 9일 발매된다.
RAVN(레이븐), 서호, 이도, 건희, 환웅, 시온으로 6인조로 구성된 원어스(ONEUS)는 '팬 한 명 한 명(ONE)의 힘이 모여 만들어진 우리(US)'라는 뜻을 가지고 있다. 또한 '결국 평범한 우리들이 함께 모여 하나의 세상을 만들어간다’는 의미도 함께 담겨 있다.
그간 실력파 뮤지션들의 성공을 이끌어온 RBW가 야심 차게 준비한 원어스(ONEUS)는 외모뿐만 아니라 작사, 작곡, 프로듀싱 그리고 안무를 직접 창작하는 실력까지 갖춘 아티스트형 퍼포먼스 그룹이다. 이미 팬들은 약 1년 10개월이란 시간 동안 ‘데뷔하겠습니다’라는 프로젝트를 통해 수많은 공연, 예능 및 버스킹 등 활발한 활동을 지켜봐왔다. 그리고 이제 팬들의 기다림의 마침표를 찍는 화려한 서막을 알리며 첫 번째 앨범 [LIGHT US]가 출시되었다.
이번 미니앨범 [LIGHT US]는 “우리를 비춘다”라는 주제를 담은 앨범으로 “사람들이 비추는 빛으로 탄생한 원어스(ONEUS)”가 만들어가는 음악을 뜻하며 동시에 타이틀곡 ‘발키리 (Valkyrie)’의 뜻처럼 어둠의 빛을 밝힌다는 의미를 담은 앨범이기도 하다.
타이틀곡 '발키리 (Valkyrie)'는 인상적인 기타 리프로 시작하여 묵직한 사운드로 전개되는 댄스 곡으로 힙합적인 요소가 가미된 사운드가 인상적인 곡이다.
또한 '발키리 (Valkyrie)'는 어둠 속에 있는 우리들을 밝히기 위해 '발키리'를 찾는다는 판타지적인 요소와 ‘빛’에 상징적 의미를 담고 있는 곡으로, 북유럽 신화 속 인간계의 전쟁에서 용감한 전사자가 생기면 전장에 나가 전사자들을 발할라 궁전으로 데리고 가는 존재로 알려진 '발키리'라는 주제와 불빛을 '밝히리'라는 중의적 표현이 더해져 이 곡의 완성도를 높였다.
미니앨범 [LIGHT US]에는 타이틀곡 포함하여 총 7곡이 수록되어 있는데 먼저 선공개 되어 개개인의 독창적인 퍼포먼스 영상과 음악으로 대중들에게 신선함을 주었던 인트로 트레일러 ‘Intro : LIGHT US’는 빛이 밝아오는 시각적인 효과를 음악으로 표현하여 미니앨범 [LIGHT US]를 함축적으로 표현한 곡이다.
그리고 색채감 있는 신스 사운드 테마에 중독성 강한 멜로디가 귀를 사로잡는 신스팝 ‘삐뚤빼뚤’은 ‘데뷔하겠습니다’ 프로젝트에서 여러 번 보여준 곡으로 이미 많은 사랑을 받은 곡이다.
원어스(ONEUS)의 첫 발라드곡 ‘붉은 실’은 보이지 않는 붉은 실이 인연을 맺어주는 중국의 설화를 모티브로 한 곡으로 차분한 피아노 선율로 시작으로 화려하게 펼쳐지는 신디사이저의 반전이 인상적인 곡이다.
다섯 번째 수록곡 ‘EYE CONTACT’은 강한 끌림에 시선을 사로잡히는 그 순간의 설렘을 타이트하게 담아 표현하였으며 리드미컬한 베이스에 세련된 비트가 돋보이는 하우스곡으로 선명하게 들어오는 훅이 인상 깊은 곡이다.
그리고 원어스(ONEUS) RAVN(레이븐)의 첫 번째 자작곡인 ‘HERO’는 누구나 주인공이나 영웅이 되기를 꿈꾸는 마음을 표현한 곡으로 센치하며 몽환적인 멜로디 라인과 강렬한 비트 소스들이 조화를 이루는 뭄바톤의 일렉트릭 댄스곡이다.
마지막 수록곡 ‘ㅁㅊㄷㅁㅊㅇ (prod. CyA)’는 원어스(ONEUS)의 형제 팀인 원위(ONEWE)의 베이스와 랩을 담당하고 있는 멤버 CyA가 프로듀싱한 곡으로 독특한 플로우와 리듬 위에 허슬의 삶을 ‘미쳤다’로 표현한 곡이다. 최고가 되고자 하는 마음을 RAVN, 이도, CyA의 각각 개인의 SWAG로 트랩힙합에 담아냈다. CyA가 훅과 베이스에 참여하여 곡의 완성도를 높였다.

Founded by renowned composer Kim Do Hoon, the RBW label is known for launching talented vocal groups like Mamamoo and Vromance. Though RBW's new group ONEUS officially debuted a week ago, they didn't appear out of the blue – the members previously took part in Produce 101 Season 2, MIXNINE and the debut project We Will Debut along with their brother group ONEWE. Among the six members, perhaps the most familiar one would be Keon Hee, who made a name for himself after singing BoA's Amazing Kiss on Produce 101.
Hip-hop has been a major part of the Korean music scene over the past few years, and more and more idol groups are digging into the genre. Among the great amount of swaggy music released recently, dance plug Valkyrie (Track 3) from ONEUS's debut record Light Us is my January jam. Valkyrie not only refers to Norse mythology, but also sounds similar to "light up" in Korean. The song starts with a series of addictive, rhythmical guitar riff sounds that serve as both the intro and the beat of the bridge parts. This song reminds me of some older K-pop hits, especially VIXX during their Eternity and Error era. Valkyrie surely is impactful enough to make ONEUS stand out among the rookies. Co-written by acclaimed producer Yong Bae, "Red Thread" (Track 4) is the only ballad in the album. In East Asian mythology, there is a belief that people destined for one another are connected by red threads. I personally really like this song as the real voices of the vocalists can be heard clearly. Meanwhile, if you've watched their pre-debut show, you'll find the melody of "ZigZag" (Track 2) really familiar! The synth-pop number was featured in their We Will Debut project a few times. Once you've listened to the track, you won't be able to get the "bbi-ddul-bbae-ddul" hook out of your head. As the main rapper of ONEUS, Ravn not only wrote his rap lyrics, but also showed his composing skills. Through his self-penned electro-dance hall track Hero (Track 6), he expresses the wish to become someone's hero and fly freely in the sky. CyA from brother group ONEWE produced the trap hip-hop number "Crazy & Crazy" (Track 7), which is performed by only Ravn and fellow rapper Lee Do. RBW never disappoints when it comes to the capabilities and vocal talents of their artists. Entering stardom with a remarkable debut track, ONEUS sang live on their debut stage which is quite impressive (considering many idol groups still use live MR). As they haven't defined themselves as a hip-hop group, I'm expecting some new attempts from ONEUS for their next comeback. Hope they can keep up with the good work and live up to the title of "promising newcomer of the year"! |
