YesAsia Editorial Description
After his critically acclaimed dramedy The Great Passage, writer-director Ishii Yuya demonstrates a new sense of maturity with Our Family, an emotionally devastating drama about the breakdown of a dysfunctional family. Tsumabuki Satoshi (The Little House) stars as Kosuke, a man who is suddenly forced to quickly take charge of his family when his mother is diagnosed with a brain tumor and is only given a short time to live. To make things worse, Kosuke is told that both his parents have each run up mounting debts, and that he was made the guarantor. An official selection of the Montreal World Film Festival and the Busan International Film Festival, Our Family also co-stars Ikematsu Sosuke (Love's Whirlpool) as the family's younger son.

Product Information
Director: Yuya Ishii
Passing sixty, Reiko is a mother who frets about her radically-deteriorating memory. A trip to the hospital ensures and yields tragic results : she has a brain tumor and likely has only a week to live.
"I'm terrified of seeing our family fall apart." These are Reiko's last words before lapsing into a dementia-like state that compels her to express her innermost thoughts and feelings about family and an old flame. Her husband and two sons are at complete loss as to how to deal with the situation as all the suppressed problems come bubbling to the surface : the family's heavy debts, a dysfunctional lifestyle, the boys' disaffection towards their parents, and a pathetic reliance of the parents on their children.

Finely-crafted family drama
Finely-crafted family drama
Mom (Harada Mieko) is an over-spending dreamer who has piled up a mountain of debts. Dad (Nagatsuka Kyozo) is a hapless businessman and unreliable husband and father. Son #2 (Ikematsu Sosuke) smokes like a chimney, drinks, and borrows money from his mother while listlessly spending time in college. Son #1 (Tsumabuki Satoshi), overworked and stressed out from being the family's sole responsible member, deals with his own marital discord by pouring his heart out to a club hostess instead of to his wife (Kurokawa Mei). This is a seriously messed-up family!
Now the family faces its biggest problem: Mom has become forgetful and prone to saying outrageous things. A trip to the hospital for tests yields terrible news. Will the family respond by drawing together or will it splinter under the strain? Writer-director Ishii Yuya never for a moment lets this tale of family crisis become cliched or turgid; he takes a standard premise and makes it feel fresh. Fine performances by the entire cast create fully-fleshed characters about whom the viewer will care greatly. Highly recommended. |
