YesAsia Editorial Description

Legendary director John Woo produces Peace Hotel, a unique Hong Kong action film starring Chow Yun Fat in one of his signature roles! Chow Yun Fat plays "The Killer", the proprietor of a sanctuary for lost souls called the Peace Hotel. The hotel is welcome lodging for fugitives and ex-cons hoping to put their lives on the straight-and-narrow. The Killer seeks his own penance, for a massacre that occurred years ago by his very hands. But his life of tranquil atonement is shattered by the appearance of a sassy mystery woman (Cecilia Yip), who claims to be the Killer's long-lost wife. The Killer knows this to be untrue, but all that must be put aside when a band of mysterious rogues shows up on the doorstep of the Peace Hotel. Can this have something to do with the Killer's dark past? Director Wai Kai Fai brings a dark, stylish edge to the world of Peace Hotel, and Chow Yun Fat displays his unparalleled charisma in a "tragic hero" role that seems tailor-made for the internationally-renowned actor! Featuring atmospheric cinematography, superlative art direction, and cool stylized action sequences, Peace Hotel is Hong Kong heroic bloodshed at its finest!

In 1921, Shanghai, a homicide killer Ping (Chow Yun Fat), killed over two hundred gangsters all at once. He created his own district, named “Peace Hotel”. Wild Wild East Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"Peace Hotel" is one very quirky movie. Chow Yun Fat plays Killer Ping, a man who viciously killed dozens including his own wife. Seeking to cover his guilt with good deeds, he opens Peace Hotel, a place where people with disreputable pasts can stay, be protected from those seeking vengeance against them, and start new lives. (In this concept, the filmmakers take a page from the "cities of refuge" in the Old Testament book of Numbers.) One day, a beautiful woman named Shau Siu Man (Cecilia Yip) bursts into the hotel, claiming to be Killer Ping's long-lost love. She then sets about turning the hotel upside down with an unending stream of wild stories of her past. Of course, Shau Siu Man is a fraud, but through her feminine wiles she begins to inch her way into Killer Ping's affections.

Then Ting Moon (Chin Ho) shows up with his cavalry of thugs, threatening to wipe everyone out unless they turn over Shau Siu Man to him; he claims that she killed his boss. The residents of Peace Hotel are terrified and demand that Shau Siu Man be turned over to the bad guys. When Killer Ping refuses to throw her out, the residents are ready to flee and we are headed for a titanic battle between Killer and the killers.

Much of the film's first half is played for laughs and Cecilia Yip absolutely steals the show. In the second half, things turn tense and violent and Chow Yun Fat steps to the fore. First-time director Wai Ka Fai creates a somewhat chaotic film, but Yip and Chow keep us interested. Let's hope that someday someone replaces the movie's cheesy incidental music with something more atmospheric (as was done with the soundtrack music for "Iron Monkey"). I can guarantee that you'll never be bored with "Peace Hotel". They don't make 'em like this anymore.
