Blue skies, green grass, and a fresh cast of rising stars hit it out of the park in the 2009 SETTV idol drama Play Ball. Lego Lee from Honey and Clover plays willful young army deserter Qi Ming who's hiding out in the picturesque rural seaside town of Hualien. With nowhere better to go, he ends up becoming the coach of the local little league team. Alice Ke Jia Yan from Miao Miao co-stars as spoiled city girl Xiao Wu who's stuck in Hualien trying to convince her eccentric grandfather to return to Taipei with her. Qi Ming and Xiao Wu start off on the wrong foot during their train ride to Hualien, but the real battle begins when they discover they're neighbors! One Million Star singer Afalean Lu (Teen Age) also appears in Play Ball as an enthusiastic teacher.

一向我行我素，沒有團體觀念的青棒選手林啟明（李國毅 飾演），最後一場爭冠賽，又因為個人英雄主義作祟，讓球隊輸了冠軍戰。不但因此被同儕排斥，回到家鄉還成了公敵，被丟雞蛋，而黯然去服役。當兵時又為了救一個新兵不被欺負，莫名其妙跟著那個新兵成了逃兵。
一身狼狽的逃兵啟明跳上山線列車，遇見從台北下來衣著華麗的公主小五（柯佳嬿 飾演），沿路上公主以為逃兵是壞人，逃兵以為公主識破他，想逃離彼此，卻又不斷地遇見。鬧出不少既緊張又爆笑的誤會。
最後逃兵受不了了，下車步行逃到花蓮深山裡，很衰的他卻又目睹一男子跳海自殺，該男子正是尚未赴任的磯崎國小少棒隊教練「洪啟勝」，啟明陰錯陽差下，頂替洪啟勝的身份，成為磯崎國小少棒隊教練，他盤算等籌足旅費便要繼續逃亡，在熱情的山胞教師布瓦（盧學叡 飾演）安排下，住進由古怪阿公（蔡振南 飾演）經營的「阿嬤照相館」。怎料隔壁住的是今天一直遇見的小五……
山地教師布瓦熱愛棒球（受早逝的哥哥影響），因為有感於山地小孩喜愛戶外運動不愛來學校上學，所以他組了一支棒球隊，希望能藉著棒球運動，既能發洩小孩們的多餘精力，最重要的是讓他們有意願來學校唸書、打球，所以啟勝就是他找來幫助完成夢想的。但校長(梁修治 飾演)卻宣佈因為沒有經費，棒球隊需立即解散。布瓦承諾一定會湊足錢讓啟勝留下，好讓啟勝繼續帶棒球隊，當啟勝看見布瓦與村民們為了湊錢，不惜下山賣血，啟勝才明白原來這村子真的喜歡棒球，小朋友們也喜歡棒球。
於是命運將他又帶回棒球場，只是這一次禍福難料，他最後會是磯崎國小棒球隊的英雄教練，還是那個國共對峙年代的逃兵狗熊？
