YesAsia Editorial Description

It all begins here! Director-star Jackie Chan's celebrated Police Story series began with this classic action comedy, which features the inimitable Jackie Chan charm and some of the most spectacular action sequences ever put to film. Jackie Chan is cop Chan Ka Kui, who's assigned to guard beautiful witness Selina (Brigitte Lin), the girlfriend of evil drug kingpin Chor Yuen. Selina's presence causes some friction between Chan and his petulant girlfriend May (international star Maggie Cheung), but when the bad guys come-a-calling, all that gets left behind. Glass breaks, bones crunch, and anything and everything becomes a weapon in Police Story!

A seminal film even in Jackie Chan's incredibly action-packed filmography, Police Story redefined action films with its undeniably creative and exquisitely choreographed mayhem. Unbelievable stunts and breathtaking set-pieces set the tone in this award-winning film, which earned a Best Picture award at the 5th Annual Hong Kong Film Awards. Action to watch for includes an amazing car chase through a hillside shantytown, a stunt-filled chase with Jackie Chan hanging onto a bus with only an umbrella, and a simply mind-blowing finale in a shopping center, which could qualify as a world record for collateral damage via punches, kicks, or people simply falling through glass. All the above, plus Jackie Chan's generous comic persona, are present and accounted for in Police Story!

Considered a Hong Kong classic, Police Story marks Jackie Chan’s initial foray into the big-time, stunt-filled action movies that become his trademark.

Chan plays a honest, self-effacing cop Chan Ka-Kui assigned to protect Salina, whose key testimony could bring down drug baron Chu. However, the witness manages to get away from Ka-Kui. With no evidence against him, Chu is set free. Chu goes on a vendetta to frame Ka-Kui for a murder. Ka-Kui goes on the run and, with time running out, must quickly find and save Salina from being killed, as well as prove his own innocence.

Police Story has been acclaimed for its amazing stunt works. There’s plenty of action and physical comedy. The movie shows off Chan’s generous comic persona to the fullest. For Jackie Chan fans, this is not only a must-see but also a must-have collectible.

Jackie on Fire! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I've got this dvd years ago and wondered why I never put in a review, silly me.

It's a brainstorm idea from Jackie (at his prime) to make an unforgettable movie. Unforgettable it is with never repeated eye-popping stunts. Playing Chan Kar Kui, an honest, hardworking-never-say-die, eager- to- please cop supported by his second-in-command superior and friend, Bill Tung. Mars plays his buddy cop-friend.

Basically movie started off with police crackdown on a drug dealing in a shanty town gone wrong through an unintentional cockup. This shanty town was actually built as a set to accomodate the wicked car chase and Jackie actually ran down that almost 45degree slope in his pursuit of the crooks followed by that umbrella and bus stunt! Because of the screwup and partly because Chu (the drug lord) tried to bribe Jackie, they made frontpage news. To boost the police image, Jackie was made pin-up boy and model police officer. The drug lord was kept in remand awaiting conviction for drug dealing & bribery while Bill & company try to convince Selina (drug lord's secretary) to turn witness for the prosecution. Bill & Jackie hatched an idea to get Mars to 'kill off' Selina so she would think it's the drug boss trying to silence her. Scared, she agreed but the plan backfired with hilarious result on court day. Maggie Cheung plays Jackie's girlfriend who finds herself playing second fiddle to his assignments. Second screwup and Jackie got transferred to a village outpost in Northern Territories.

Selina (played by Brigitte Lin) was eventually kidnapped as bait and Jackie framed for killing a crooked cop while rescuing her. Jackie turned into Dirty Harry to clear his name and Selina turned witness for the prosecution by gathering evidence for Jackie. The finale came into fore with plenty of dangerous stunts in the shopping centre where candy glass fixtures were shattered, chaps got thrown off escalators and who can forget Jackie's one-off death defying jump from the railings onto the spiraling light display spanning 4-level high to end up hitting a glass fixture on the ground floor??? He was actually injured in this stunt. Everyone was happy, crooks were caught, Jackie cleared his name and ..........until PS2.

You gotta have this to keep up the trilogy. One of Jackie's best!!

Police Story. Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
One of the Four Great Classics of Jackie Chan: Greatest Contemporary Jackie Chan Film Not also starring Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao.

A Royal Hong Kong police officer assigned to Operation Boar Hunt, Chan Ka Kui (Kevin Chan in some other versions) is assigned to keep watch over a Prominent HK Drug Lord, Chu Tu (Legendary director Chor Yuen) while he makes a drug deal in a shanty town somewhere in Hong Kong's New Territories.

Him and his fellow police officer Kim (Stuntman turned actor, Mars) keep surveillance over his secretary, Salina Fong (Brigitte Lin) however she sees them and tells Chu Tu. The Triads escape out of the town and hijack a Double Decker Bus with Ka Kui not far behind, running after the bus with an Umbrella. He is eventually able to capture the Triads and bring them into police custody, Salina is released, as she would be a vital witness to help prosecute the Triads. Ka Kui is put in charge of protecting her...

First of all I would like to say I love this movie. Rare for this kind of movie, Jackie does turn in a fine dramatic performance at one point in the film, where he is framed for killing a crooked cop, while the other performances are not the greatest ever, they are still good, especially for a HK action film. Special Credit goes to Lau Chi-Wing, who plays Chu Tu’s Lawyer, horseracing commentator Bill Tung-biu (Uncle Bill) and Kwok-Hung-Lam (Inspector Raymond Chou) for fine Comedic performances.

Enough on the performances, the action is what you would expect from a Jackie Chan film and Action is what Police story Delivers! Each action scene is memorable and a standout, as usual, I won't go into detail here, so go see the movie for yourself!
In short, Highly Recommended for anyone who likes action and a must-see for every Jackie Chan Fan!

God Bless Jackie Chan! Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
Enough folks have already commented on the extraordinary stunts in this movie. It is a 'must have', if youre a Jackie Chan fan. My only slightly negative comment about this version, is that the sound is a bit off sync. Something that others may not notice, but something that kinda irks me.

He is having a bad day Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Jackie Chan starts the Police Story series with this excellent take on the police dept. in Hong Kong in the mid 80's. To take the film at it's basic form just watch the opening five minutes of the film. Through no fault of their own the police dept. reduce a shanty town in Hong Kong( looks like the New Territories but i could be wrong ) to complete rubble. But to take it like that would be to rob Jackie of the solid work he put in to the film. Crime boss Chu thinks Ka Kui(Jackie) will be a good little cop and roll over like the rest. Wrong-o! Jackie takes him and saves the operation from being a total wash out. He then becomes the poster boy for the H.K. police. When he is given the unenviable task of minding Selina Wong(Brigette Lin), Chu's secratary or girlfriend depending in which version you have, he gets more than he bargined for. Within the space for twenty minutes he cheeses off his girlfriend May(Maggie Cheung) and gives Selina the chance to foul the court case against Chu up for the police. Of course Chu gets off scott free. Chu then sets about to destroy Ka Kui's life. Disgraced and dishonoured Ka Kui comes to relise that Selina is the key to saving the case. However Selina is Chu's pet and won't help Ka Kui in any way. Chu however is nervous that Ka Kui with Selina put it all together and decides that Selina needs to be out of the picture. He tries to set Ka Kui as the fall guy for Selina's murder by getting one of Ka Kui's police buddies to betray him. It backfires, Selina surviving and his buddy being murdered instead. Backed against a wall with Chu on one side and the police on the other Ka Kui with the help of Selina, May, his commanding officer and division chief sets out to gather the evidence he needs and to save his life, his career, Selina and May's lives, the department's reputation and the lives of all the innocent by-standers of H.K. from Chu and his thugs. Wheeuuuuooo! Yeah, impossible right! Not for Jackie Chan. Excellent acting from the whole cast and brillant directing from Chan Kong Sang this is the film that took police drama/thrillers/comedies to a whole new level and changed Jackie's career for the better. Never bettered, never equalled if you watch this film and think you saw scenes and stunts in this in other Hollywood film it's because THEY RIPPED IT FROM JACKIE! Picture wise the film good with a few minor scratches on the print. It's not true anamorphic widescreen just letterboxed but it won't detract from your enjoyment of the film. Chinese and Mandarin language and Chinese,Mandarin and English subtitles recorded in Dolby Surround. Coola buula!
