YesAsia Editorial Description

Directed by Furuhata Yasuo, the 1999 classic Poppoya - Railroad Man swept the top prizes including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress at the 23rd Japan Academy Awards. The late, great Takakura Ken delivers one of the greatest performances of his career as an aged railway worker looking back on his life in this elegiac character study based on a novel by Asada Jiro.

Lonely stationmaster Sato Otomatsu (Takakura Ken) has spent much of his life managing the train station at the sleepy mountain mining town of Horomai in Hokkaido. As Sato nears retirement, he learns that his branch line, which has been unprofitable for years, will also be closing down. The news triggers his memories of a lifetime devoted to work, and the sacrifices and regrets made along the way in regards to his family. Sato finds life changing in unexpected ways when a girl who reminds him of his late daughter appears.

Product Information

Otomatsu Sato (Ken Takakura) is honest, firm and loyal small-town stationmaster in northern Japan. He spends most of his life on the branch line. Uncommonly faithful, he could not leave his station even when his only daughter died and his beloved wife (Shinobu Otake) died in hospital also. Nevertheless, he can do nothing but stands on the frozen platform under falling snow, as if punishing himself. One day, a strange but lovely little girl appears in front of him on the platform. The doll in her arm somehow catches his attention. After chatting for a while, she leaves like a breeze. It lets him naturally missing his deceased daughter Yukiko (Ryoko Hirosue)….

Takakura Ken and his Train Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
A man, his trains and his beloved family.
I can't think of anyone else who can better play
the man other than Takakura Ken. He was perfection.
The deep snow and a solitary man waiving his sign
for his train will stay with you as long as
you love movies.

best of drama movie Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I have seen this movie many years ago in Bangkok film festival. I just happen to know that it's on market, so I don't hesitate to buy to my collections.

I never cried this much in any movie, so impressive.
Everybody in the theater came out with very red eyes.
The story just flows slowly but overwhelmly in the audiences'hearts.

Good movie Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Beautiful scenery, good cinematography. Non-Asians might not get the story, might think it's boring, even ridiculous the way the guy carries on everyday.

A sentimental fairy tale Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
Stationmaster Sato, the railway man, or "Poppoya," once engineered the thundering coal trains that ran the line. But the mine has closed, the town is dying. His role has been reduced to standing guard over an empty platform and punctually greeting the one remaining diesel trolley, whose only passengers are often the engineers changing shifts. These details are not laden with overt political commentary. They are merely life's uncaring inevitabilities.

Instead, the pathos is played out against the stark beauty of Japan's Snow Country. This is a classic example of awa're, the beauty and poignancy that accompany a deep sense of loss. The stoical Sato, played by the famously stoical Ken Takakura, is a modern Job, who now looks back on a life filled with loss--not just the loss of the town and his job, but his daughter and wife as well. But unlike Job he does not curse fate or God, nor does he indulge in self-pity. A greater family of friends has grown up around him. We can believe the resolute Sato when he claims that he will leave this life with "no regrets."

It is at this point that director Yasuo Furuhata, working from the novel by Jiro Asada, transcends bathos with a touching and sentimental adaptation of the fairy tale of the Snow Woman, the Yuki Onna. There is no lack of foreshadowing, though it is done so quietly that you may not notice until Sato does. In the end, he realizes the Snow Child's identity, and so, according to the tale, the snow must reclaim him. Yet not unwillingly, and not before she has shown him what can bloom when winter finally yields to the warmth of human affection.

a great movie Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
It was a great movie for those who like to see a real Japanese man's character. I would recommend this movie to those who want to find a good role model for themselves. The main character had a stong personal character. I'm sorry for the fans of Hirosue Ryoko. You'll be asking when she will appears, but if you do that you won't enjoy the movie. Although I could only say that Hirosue san had made a very strong pressure of feelings because of her appearance in the role she had in the movie. Hirosue san was great. Her act to pretended so mysterious was too good to attracted the main character to loose his stubborness. This is another great one that I ever saw.
