YesAsia Editorial Description

From the wildly imaginative mind of Miyazaki Hayao and Studio Ghibli, Princess Mononoke is a grand fantasy epic about the eternal war between human and nature. Miyazaki began drawing conceptual sketches for the film as early as the late 1970's, creating a complex and visually breathtaking world in which human and various creatures living in nature co-exist in a precarious balance that can tip over at any moment. Set around 15th century Japan, Mononoke follows a young man who sets out to cure a curse put on his arm after defeating a scorned boar god-turned-demon and a girl who was raised in the wild by wolves known as Princess Mononoke. Hugely popular at the time of its release, Princess Mononoke was the first animated film to win Best Picture at the Japan Academy Prize and remains one of the highest grossing Japanese films of all time. It is also considered one of the greatest films made by Japan's premier animation studio.

Set during the Muromachi Period (1333-1568) of Japan, Princess Mononoke is a story about a mystic fight between the Animal Gods of the forest and humans. On the side of the Animal Gods is San (Mononoke Hime), a human girl raised by the wolf god Moro. On the side of the humans is Lady Eboshi, building a kingdom for oppressed people by cutting down the forest for her iron-making operation. In the middle of this fierce fighting for survival, Ashitaka, an Emishi boy, struggles to find a way for both sides to co-exist. But the fighting just becomes more and more bloody and all hope seems to be lost...

Blu-ray edition features a brand-new 2k high definition print of the film made from a newly created 4k master print. It includes storyboards, dubbing script, "Princess Mononoke in USA" and trailers.

Professional Review of "Princess Mononoke (Blu-ray) (Multi-Language & Subtitled) (Region Free) (Japan Version)"

September 10, 2004

This professional review refers to Princess Mononoke (DVD) (2-Disc Edition) (Hong Kong Version)
Princess Mononokeis not a film to watch. It is a film to feel. It is one of those rare films that is as much an experience as it is entertainment and it appeals on a level that goes deeper than thought or analysis, to a place inhabited by the most enduring of truths. This is the same place that all truly good stories come from, the place where mythologies take on the aspect of reality - the details may change but the spirit remains the same and its archetypal elements appeal at a depth that transcend intellect and defy cultural boundaries.

It's a place where Mononoke's creator, Hayao Miyazaki, obviously feels at home. Like his young hero Ashitaka, Miyazaki easily bridges seemingly diametric opposites, embracing grand entertainment and spiritual depth, high adventure and meaningful dialogue, without conflict or mutual exclusivity. It is a feat to behold for rarely is it as successfully achieved as it is in this film.

Testament to the power and vibrancy of Miyazaki's voice, The film, upon its release in 1997, the highest grossing domestic film in Japan, out-grossed only by Titanic later that same year. In 1998 it became central to an agreement between Studio Ghibli's publisher, Tokuma Publishing, and Disney Studios, with Disney signing for international production and distribution rights to no less than eleven Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli films.

This is a story as much a metaphor for modern life as it is an ode to Japan's cultural heritage and the human condition. The characters populate a distinctly Japanese landscape, the complexity and the emotional realism that is brought to them illuminating their semi-historical origins. The film has an unashamed sense of nationality, and while it remains firmly positioned in the realm of fantasy it does so by drawing from reality, from Japan's rich and complex past. Here is where the magic starts, for somewhere in the country's history, one can almost believe gods walked and heroes lived. It is this core that gives the film its foundation.

And it is the central themes of conflict, man against nature, progression versus tradition, that gives the film its purpose. They are perhaps well-worn paths to walk but Miyazaki paves them with a unique maturity, showing us that nothing, not even entertainment, is truly simple. Here there is no right or wrong, good or evil, here motivations are based upon need not malice and events form as consequences of actions that could not have been pre-determined. Ashitaka's refusal to take a simplistic standpoint within the conflict emphasises this real-life complexity, provides the viewer with a place to begin to examine concepts of right and wrong, rather than merely passively consuming those concepts as dictated by others. In the end, both Ashitaka and Miyazaki also shows the viewer what that maturity means. There is no fairy tale ending, no storybook Happily Ever After and this is what finally gives the film its spirit for what there is, is the understanding that things must and do end, but that in ending, in death, there is always rebirth. And that is perhaps the simplest, most beautiful concept of all.

So, foundation, purpose and spirit, Princess Mononoke is undeniably a charming, complex and sweetly powerful film that is pure magic (and I do not throw words like that around lightly). Flawlessly crafted from concept to visualization and production and every detail between, it is perhaps one of the most mature pieces of anime ever made, in any language. And of course, superb only just manages to describe the gorgeous soundtrack by regular Miyazaki composer Joe Hisaishi whose other credits include the brilliant scores to several of Kitano Takeshi's finest films, and whose talent impresses itself upon the audience with effortless power, completing the spell.

Finally on Blu-ray Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I'm in the USA and the price was worth not having to wait for American Disney to roll this out.
I just could not wait for this to come out on Blu-ray. So happy it's mine.

The picture on Blu is clear and beautiful like other Ghibli releases. The detail pulls out a fine image of the background watercolors and the characters are alive and vibrant.

I enjoyed the Japanese DTS master audio mix. It's clear and surrounds the listener in Joe Hisaishi's sweeping score.

The extras are few but nice. First a storyboard art flow as the movie plays. PM in America, a 20 minute behind the scenes of Miyazaki-Sanpushing the N. American release of the film to Toronto, Los Angeles and New York. The interviews here are revealing to hear what's in Miyazaki's head. Many trailers and tv ads round out the extras.

Recommended for fans of this epic and amazing movie.

Very overrated Customer Review Rated Bad 4 - 4 out of 10
Don't get me wrong, I am a huge fan of Miyazaki-san's works, but this is one of his worst and it isn't worthy of such wonderful reviews.

From bloody & disgustingly gory images to a very boring storyline, I must say...this is a HORRIBLE first impression of Hayao Miyazaki.

PLEASE DO NOT BUY IF YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN A GOOD MIYAZAKI FILM BEFORE!!!

I recommend "Spirited Away" or "Howl's Moving Castle" for first-timers.

Action-packed! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
That's right! A ghibli movie that's action-packed!!! Very different from other ghibli titles in that more violence is depicted: from sliced limbs to chopped-off heads :p The story is simply amazing. Quite possibly the best ghibli film.

Princess Mononoke Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Princess Mononoke is an amazing work of animated storytelling. This is probably one of the most involving storylines to have even been created, combined with beautiful artistry and a wonderful soundtrack, this has got to be one of best movies that I have seen in my 33 years on this planet.
Watch & enjoy, please.
