Counterfeit artist Lee Man (Aaron Kwok) is extradited back to Hong Kong after getting arrested in Thailand. The police want information about the elusive "Painter," the notorious shadow figure behind a counterfeiting ring and a series of murders. Fearing for his safety, Lee refuses to talk. Renowned artist Yuen Man (Zhang Jingchu) soon shows up to bail him out. Back in the nineties, Lee and Yuen were lovers and struggling artists in Vancouver. Yuen hit it big, but Lee never got anywhere until he discovered his knack for art forgery. Recognizing his talent, Painter (Chow Yun Fat) recruited the down and frustrated Lee into his operation to forge the most valuable artwork: the US 100-dollar bill. But once he's in, there's no way out.

Product Information
Lee MAn (Aaron Kwok), a member of a notorious money counterfeiting ring, is arrested in Thailand and extradited back to Hong Kong. Thanks to renowned painter Yuen Man (Zhang Jing-chu), Lee is offered a deal by the police: Reveal the identity of Painter (Chow Yun-Fat), the charismatic leader of the counterfeiting ring, and Yuen can bail him out. Lee has no choice but to comply and recount his story: Inn the 1990s, Lee and Yuen were lovers living together in Vancouver, seeking to be seen in the art world. However, success eludes them, and Lee is forced to go make counterfeit painting to make a living.
Lee's countyerfiet paintings catch the eyes of Painter, and he decides to recruit Lee to join his team. Together with Painter's elite team, Lee travels the world in search of technologies to create the "Super Dollar,"a counterfeit bill that circumvents the anti-counterfeiting measures of the 1996 American dollar. But when Lee witnesses Painter's violent methods in action, he becomes desperate to escape his employer's grip.
Will Painter come out of hiding to seek revenge for Lee's betrayal? Or will he disappear for good?

Chow Yun Fat's greatest hits

Felix Chong's Project Gutenberg just garnered a ridiculous 17 nominations at the Hong Kong Film Awards so there are many nice things that could be said about the film's twisty plot, slick pacing and tight direction. I'd like to focus on the single most important factor that makes the crime thriller a must-watch for Hong Kong film fans (or at least me): Chow Yun Fat.
Chow Yun Fat is in peak Chow Yun Fat form in the role of a criminal mastermind behind a counterfeiting operation. His commanding and charismatic performance in the film channels the classic effortless charm that captured a generation of Asian cinema fans and also the dangerous, unreadable duplicity of later roles in films like Curse of the Golden Flower and Let the Bullets Fly. The veteran star got into really great shape for the film so his action scenes are also a giddy blast to the past. Basically, Project Gutenberg often feels like a Chow Yun Fat greatest hits collection. Some films of recent years, such as A Better Tomorrow 2018 and John Woo's Manhunt, have misfired at trying to re-create the old school Hong Kong action vibe, instead reminding audiences how much better those old movies are. But when Project Gutenberg deploys Chow Yun Fat covered in blood splatter, brandishing two guns and shooting while leaping through the air, it doesn't come off as cash-in nostalgia. Throwback without being clichéd or outdated, the thrilling and knowing homage doesn't just excite, it also smartly fits into the film. Of course, most of all it works because Chow Yun Fat is simply that awesome. |
