YesAsia Editorial Description

Newly crowned Hong Kong Film Awards Best Actor Nick Cheung teams up again with his The Beast Stalker co-star Zhang Jingchu in the Mainland production Red River.

Media attention has focused mostly on the nudity and love scenes in Red River, but with the film's theatrical release in China, director Zhang Jiarui (who has worked with Zhang Jingchu in The Road and Hua Yao Bride in Shangri-la previously) has won over the audience with this raw portrayal of pure love. Produced by Hollywood screenwriter Bruce Feirstein (of James Bond movies The World is Not Enough and Tomorrow Never Dies fame), the touching romance drama also features two Golden Horse Award-winning thespians Loletta Lee (Ordinary Heroes) and Danny Lee (The Killer) in key supporting roles.

The film tells of a love story that takes place on the border between China and Vietnam. Zhang plays Tao, a slightly slow Vietnamese girl who lost her father to the Vietnam War. Years later, she crosses the Red River to find her aunt (Loletta Lee) in China and works as a cleaner in her aunt's massage parlor. Tao later meets two father figures - a kind-hearted gang boss (Danny Lee) and a broken-hearted hawker (Nick Cheung) - and both of these men would literally kill to protect her.

Big rewards from a small budget movie Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
"Red River" tells of Tao (Zhang Jingchu) a mentally retarded Vietnamese orphan who comes to a Chinese border town to live with her aunt (Loletta Lee, looking as gorgeous as she ever did). A local hustler (Nick Cheung), who makes a meager living on the street with his karaoke equipment, hears Tao sing and realizes that her pure, sweet voice can help promote his karaoke business. So, he hires Tao from the aunt and draws crowds by having her sing on the street. Everything goes smoothly until a cruel crime boss (Danny Lee) decides that he wants Tao for himself.

Out of this simple formula, director Zhang Jiarui manages to spin a riveting, heartbreaking tale. It is a treat to see veteran actors like Danny Lee, Nick Cheung, and Loletta Lee perform and Zhang Jingchu succeeds in submerging herself within her childlike character. "Red River" proves once again that you don't need a big budget or fancy special effects to keep the audience on the edge of their seats. Its success is built upon its strong characters, its gritty, realistic feel, and a gripping story. Very highly recommended.
