YesAsia Editorial Description

A rare costume film from Taiwan, Ripples of Desire brings together four of Taiwan's most popular stars: Michelle Chen and Ivy Chen, playing sisters again after Hear Me, and television idols Joe Cheng (It Started with a Kiss) and Jerry Yan (Magic Kitchen) of F4. Known for the lesbian dramas Spider Lilies and Drifting Flowers, Zero Chou directs this handsome period romance set in Taiwan over 300 years ago during the maritime ban. The visually and emotionally beguiling tale transports audiences back to a poetic time of tragic courtesans, dashing pirates and thwarted love. Hong Kong stars Simon Yam and Sandra Ng and Mainland actors Li Xiaoran and Mao Zijun also co-star in this ambitious period drama, which poses questions about the will and status of women amid its lyrical romance and aesthetic splendor.

After losing their father at sea, sisters White Snow (Michelle Chen) and White Frost (Ivy Chen) are taken in by Madame Moon (Sandra Ng) and groomed into the top courtesans at the House of Flowers. Innocent and kindhearted, Snow enchants many with her beautiful voice, including her new music teacher Wen (Joe Cheng), but she suffers from a disease that cannot be known. Ambitious and calculating, Frost sees the world with more cynical eyes and hides her feelings for Scarface (Jerry Yan), the right-hand man of seafaring outlaw Master Hai (Simon Yam). As courtesans, Snow and Frost know their destinies are out of their own grasps, but their hearts cannot turn back the ripples of desire and change.

Ambitious romantic drama Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Disregarding the Ming Dynasty's edict against maritime trade, buccaneer Master Hai Yuan (Simon Yam) rules over his own island city which thrives on both licit and illicit seafaring business. The island's main attraction is a brothel operated by Mistress Moon (Sandra Ng), Master Hai's lover. And the main attraction of the brothel is a pair of sisters, White Snow (Michelle Chen) and White Frost (Ivy Chen), whose beauty, dancing, and musical talents hold audiences in thrall. This is the sumptuous setting for writer/director Zero Chou's "Ripples of Desire".

White Snow is the object of everyone's desire. Her musical tutor Wen Xiu (Cheng Yuanchang) is smitten by her beauty and sweet singing voice. Unknown to tutor Wen, White Snow bears symptoms of leprosy, a disease which had infected her father. Although she yearns for Wen's love, she resists his advances. When she resists the demands of Mistress Moon to sell herself, White Snow is locked up in the brothel's dungeon and replaced on stage by her sister. White Frost, who secretly loves Scarface (Jerry Yan), Master Hai's right-hand man, draws the attentions of a seemingly wealthy merchant (Mao Zijun), whose fortune actually is controlled by his wife, Lady Jen (Li Xiaoran). After the merchant runs up huge debts, his wife comes to save him. When the merchant turns his back on her to pursue his desires for White Frost, Lady Jen falls into the hands of Master Hai's gang. Lady Jen's stoicism in the face of her suffering awakens unaccustomed affections within Master Hai. Misunderstandings conspire to jeopardize everyone's hopes.

"Ripples of Desire", which creates a vivid visual world, operates on multiple levels. On the surface are familiar stories of great loves thwarted by fateful circumstances. Dig a little deeper and one finds a theme of choices made either to maintain one's integrity and accept the hardships that may flow from that course or to compromise one's integrity and abide the destructive rot that results from that choice. The film includes two action sequences, but those seem shoehorned into the production to appease male viewers. At its heart, "Ripples of Desire" is a satisfyingly complex moral tale, featuring fine performances by Michelle Chen, Simon Yam, and Sandra Ng. Highly recommended.
