YesAsia Editorial Description

Sex is Zero hero Lim Chang Jung kicks up more slapstick romantic comedy in Romantic Debtors from director Shin Keun Ho. The comedic veteran pairs up again with his sassy Scout co-star Uhm Ji Won for lots of tough love and gut-wrenching laughs. There's a huge debt to settle when a detective with bad credit and a bad-tempered debt collector fall in love in Romantic Debtors!

Homicide detective Bang (Lim Chang Jung) finds himself saddled with debt after signing as a guarantor for a friend. It's cranky credit company representative Mu Ryeong's (Uhm Ji Won) job to make calls day in and day out to chase the money back from debtors, and Bang has been a less than cooperative assignment. The two hit it off well when they meet by chance at the police station, but it's all out battle once she founds out that he's the deadbeat who's been telling her off over the phone!

Silly Moo-ryung rings harassed cop! (1st bit) Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Chang-jung Lim’s in his familiar comedy mode in this friction based rom-com “Romantic Debtors”. This time he’s harassed cop Geuk-hyun Bang, owing money to a loan company (boo!) and nagged persistently by ‘robot operative’ Moo-ryung (Ji-won Uhm), who calls Geuk-hyun every 30 minutes on his cell phone to pay up his debts (still, it could have been worse, like 30 seconds). Geuk-hyun though seems to like a popular US military bugle ring-tone for his cell phone, and when this loud bugle tone sounds it generally heralds Moo-ryung ‘pay the money now’ nag time is due. Geuk-hyun, though, keeps puttering Moo-ryung off, due to his lack of monthly credit and the fact that it’s his friend who owes him the loaned money, for Geuk-hyun then to re-pay the loan company. But Geuk-hyun’s demanding phone calls prove rather dangerous at times, especially when he’s with his police team about to sneak up on criminals to suddenly get ‘Moo-ryung bugle alert’ calls at crucial cop nabbing baddy moments. Furious at getting ever pestered by Moo-ryung’s ‘pay up pronto’ 30 min calls, Geuk-hyun even gets called as he chases a thief who had ironically stolen Moo-ryung’s handbag in a street robbery. When the thief is caught and Moo-ryung arrives at the police station to get her stolen belongings back, she’s grateful but unaware Geuk-hyun is her ‘pestered client’.

Later, after more annoying bugle alerts/phone calls/headaches, Geuk-hyun gets so pissed that he curses Moo-ryung big time over the phone, which causes the latter to storm into Geuk-hyun’s police station (Moo-ryung eventually sussing out Geuk-hyun is her victim..I mean client) to demand an apology. This proves difficult (as you could imagine), but as both oppressed cop and loan shark operative spill out arguing into the cop station car park, and Moo-ryung doing some serious finger prodding into Geuk-hyun’s chest, Geuk-hyun eventually concedes his curse and apologies to Moo-ryung. This leads to the two eventually getting drunk together and a slight sort of friendship peculating. Well, Moo-ryung still demands Geuk-hyun to cough up the dosh, but falls all over the place saying it.

Charge of the debt brigade (2nd bit) Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Of course Moo-ryung’s annoying phone calls to Geuk-hyun’s eventually lead to love between the two. It’s a rom-com after all, and although formulaic, this is a film with good fluid moments. Moo-ryung’s background of her mother being left in debt by her father also ironically dovetails into a befitting later instalment. This incident is when a depressed and disgruntled man (another super nagged client via Moo-ryung’s cell phone ear bashing) abducts Moo-ryung and holds her hostage on top of the roof of her loan company building, threatening to throw himself and Moo-ryung off the roof. Geuk-hyun tries to quell the situation, and having researched about Moo-ryung’s own unfortunate bad money debts (she drove Geuk-hyun nuts enough to research her past), Geuk-hyun uses his ‘subtle’ method of blurting out to the depressed man of his own debt Moo-ryung as persisted him with (and proving it too!) but of how much Moo-ryung’s in debt herself, due to her dad underwriting his debts. This embarrassing moment though leads to some serious emotional conflicts. Well, serious as much as this movie will allow.

Certainly an unreal rom-com, with plenty of slapstick and bash it out Lombard v Gable style, which gradually gets all lovey dovey (well, sort of!). The plot is daft, the chemistry between leads is good, and its 90mins of goonish hard-boiled fun with merit. The humour and serious aspects of debt balance well, and Chang-jung is again a great quirky self bumbling ‘hero’ in yet another aspect of his regular satire, a sort of ‘man of the people’ where debtors are concerned in this case. Pretty Ji Won is certainly spreading her wings (gets drunk a lot here, too…hahha) and the bit at the police station where Moo-ryung interjects for a her sister (I think its her sister, I can't remember now! :S), who gets fleeced by a dodgy ‘boyfriend’ for lots of her cash, Ji-won’s acting there is good and funny. Ji-won is lovely of course! This DVD version has only trailers/TVspot for extras unfortunately, but it would have been interesting to have seen the poster/photos promo shoot! A film worth getting if you love madcap rom-coms. Don’t borrow any money to buy this though, just in case you get called every 30 minutes by Moo-ryung for the owed cash! Although if you’re a fella, and it being Ji-won you should be very happy. :D
