YesAsia Editorial Description
A suspicious, ghostly woman (Anita Mui) enters Yuan's (Alex Man) newspaper company to place an advertisement in search of her lover who has been missing for half a century. The woman's pleading eyes unfold the events of her story in 1930 Hong Kong when she worked as Fleur, a high-class courtesan in a lavish brothel and met wealthy heir Twelfth Master Chan (Leslie Cheung). After intense courtship, the two began a doomed relationship opposed by Chan's parents that ends in Romeo & Juliet-style tragedy. They decide to die together and meet in the afterlife. After a dreadful 53-year wait, Fleur returns to the mortal world and wanders the streets dressed in cheongsam, searching for her lost love.
Starring late Hong Kong legends Leslie Cheung and Anita Mui, Rouge from acclaimed filmmaker Stanley Kwan tells a sad and enchanting love story about passion, dedication, fate, and karma. One of the most classic films in Hong Kong Cinema, Rouge earned numerous awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actress, Best Editing, Best Film Score, and Best Song at the 8th Hong Kong Film Awards.

Masterpiece!
This blu ray release looks much better than all the previous dvd versions. Very little print damage is visible and the colours have more depth to them. Black levels are a little too black at times though. Full marks also for going to the trouble of a 7.1 soundtrack on what is for the most part a dialogue driven movie. The film itself is brilliant of course! Two of hong kongs finest at the top of their game, both sadly no longer with us. Buy it now! |

Rouge
This is an unusual love story that ended sadly. Anita played a highclass prostitute and Leslie was the 2nd son of a very wealthy family. He fell for her during a lunch social with friends at the 'club'. Naturally the feelings were mutual and they were an item much to the family's disapproval as they considered it an 'uneven' match of social status. When it came to the arranged marriage of Leslie by his family, the couple made a pact and decided to commit suicide together so that they could with each other 'till eternity'. Sadly things didn't go according to plans and Anita turned up 50 years later as a ghost to search for Leslie to keep their vow. The truth emerged after she met a newspaper editor and his girlfriend who helped her to track Leslie.
Events like these are very common back in the 1930s. Many rich men begets concubines thro highclass prostitutes/club dancers, etc. Nothing ordinary to have 3 or 4 wives if you could afford it. Of course social status and 'saving face' are the norm if you happened to be the sole heir to the family fortune. Although these women, many were in the trade because their family were poor and they have to support/repay debts or being sold to pimps as teenagers, were generally good and the only way out were to 'secure' a man willing to love them as they are and eventually give them a better life. Anita deserved the award for best actress but Leslie's part was played down a little. A lot of chemistry between these two. For the younger audience who thought the opera/social status/call-house bit were fiction, they are very real. I bought the digitally remastered version but the colour was quite dark, very disappointed. The sound production were good. Certainly a movie for those fans of Anita and Leslie. |

Great film
This is a narrative love story of a young courtesean looking for her reincarnated lover 50 years after they "supposedly" committed suicide... only to find out that the reason why she did not meet him is because they did not die together.
It's historial, and wonderfully done. You will enjoy it much as i did. Don't forget to buy your copy too. |

great anita!!!
i saw this movie last weekend and i have to say that is one of the best movie that i ever see. anita plays really really good. all her emotions let you know how she feels at the moment. anita was even better than leslie although leslie was good too. leslie looks very handsome (a little feminim) but this is that what i like.and the song at end from anita was so emotionally that makes you cry. i think this is THE movie that everyone has to see if this person wants to see anita and leslie together. fantastic!!!!!!!!!! |
