陸奧守因不願強徵困苦百姓稅賦而遭流放，其妻玉木帶著兒子廚子王和女兒安壽離鄉避難，不幸在途中遭人蛇矇騙導致母子失散，廚子王與安壽被賣給山椒大夫為奴。

十年後，廚子王在安壽自我犧牲協助下逃離山椒大夫處，帶著一封耀山寺住持的信到京都找關白申訴，之後被賜名正道太良並升為丹後守。

廚子王上任後便頒布命令廢止奴隸制度，在拯救奴隸脫離苦海後立即辭官，出發尋找失散的母親。

Yet another undisputed masterpiece by one of the foremost filmmakers to emerge from Japan in the 20th century. Excellent film in excellent condition, with English subtitles. Look no further if you are looking for a classic drama with strong elements of human passion, thrill and even fantasy. Simply heart-rending.
