YesAsia Editorial Description
Set Off, directed by debutant Liu Jiang, is the first film completed under China Film Group's young filmmaker funding project. Garnering great word of mouth when it was released theatrically, this low-budget comedy is highly acclaimed for its smart script and great casting, and critics even compare it to 2006's Crazy Stone, another Mainland sleeper hit. Set Off is about Lao Cui (played by comedy star Fan Wei), a good-for-nothing but kind-hearted man running a Chinese restaurant in Cyprus. He comes home to Beijing only to find his wife cheated on him, pregnant with his best friend's baby. Devastated, Cui's misfortune is further compounded by the news that his business partner is going to sell his restaurant. Before he flies back to Cyprus, Cui bumps into a sassy girl named Xiao Xia (played by the multi-talented Ju Wenpei, who is also the film's composer), and his real nightmare has only just begun...

Mr. Nice Guy gets the girl
Although it's not billed as such, Mainland movie Set Off can actually be branded a romantic comedy - just not a typical one. The film delivers the laughs and gets a message across: beautiful babes don't just favor bad boys. Our good old Lao Cui can attest to that. Cui (veteran comedian Fan Wei) starts off in the Beijing airport as he flies back from Cyprus to divorce his wife, who has cheated on him with his best friend. Barely landed, he receives another smack to the ear: his business partner is selling his restaurant in Cyprus, so he needs to fly back asap. While on his way to the airport, he gets carjacked by a drunken damsel-in-distress, who throws up all over his body. Cui then makes a decision that not only changes his itinerary for the day, but his whole course of life as well. He escorts this lovely girl named Xia (played by actress Ju Wenpei, who is also the film's composer and score conductor) to her home, where he gets kicked out while stripping to clean his clothes. He then gets pulled into a fight and ends up without luggage and passport, hugging himself shirtless in the cold, one eye bruised. He needs to get to the plane, but with his passport locked inside Xia's home, he can't help but follow her around town. With crooks chasing after her, they are always on the run, and she requests him to help retrieve a locked-away treasure. Soon enough, Cui reluctantly (or otherwise, depends on how you see it) becomes Xia's protector and partner-in-crime. By this point, everyone should see their relationship is going to be a romantic one, even though Cui may not be the obvious love interest for a girl like Xia: he is old enough to be her daddy. He is fat, but his wallet is not. And his appearance... well that's nothing to write home about. Initially, Xia sees him as a nice fool to be taken advantage of, but as an abusive boyfriend and an unexpected pregnancy enter the picture later on, Xia begins to find herself emotionally attached to Cui, and, before he knows it, the knight in shineless armor has captured the princess's heart. |
