GTH Romantic Marathon
GTH has pretty much perfected the formula for populist commercial fare when it comes to horror, romantic comedy and youth films. For the studio's seventh anniversary feature, they went with romance. And stars, of course. Similar to the studio's 2008 film Hormones, Seven Something takes the ensemble omnibus route with three romantic shorts about relationship crossroads at different ages – 14, 21 and 42 – that refer to the significance of seven years as a cycle of change.

Helmed by 4bia director Paween Purijitpunya, the opening story "14 Likes" is the youngest, with SuckSeed's teen heartthrob Kao Jirayu La-ongmanee and Laddaland's Punpun Suthatta Udomsilp as cute new high school couple Puan and Milk. Their relationship is announced to their peers the usual way: changing their relationship statuses on Facebook. Puan is particularly active on social media and takes pride in attracting comments and views with his posts. Puppy love breaks down when he insensitively uploads videos of Milk onto YouTube without her permission. As trivial as this may all sound, "14 Likes" is actually smart and on-topic in its depiction of the ubiquity of social media use among young people and how it can impact real-life relationships. The teenage chapter of the movie lives up to its young age with bright colors, fast dialogue and a hyperactive tone.

We welcome the twenties with Bangkok Traffic Love Story director Adisorn Tresirikasem's "21/28," which reunites him with Cris Sirin Horwang. Cris and Dear Dakanda's Sunny Suwanmethanon play actors who fell in love at 21 while shooting a cheesy romantic blockbuster. Once the toast of tinsel town, the couple broke up in very ugly and public fashion. Seven years later, she's a struggling actress and he's an out-of-shape aquarium staff with the chance to shoot the movie's sequel, if they can reconcile first. The story jumps back and forth between the present and past, revealing how they came together and fell apart through key piecemeal moments. Star power drives this segment, the most calculated of the three, thanks to the "wink wink" presence of Cris and Sunny as has-been stars. Fun is also had with the movie-within-a-movie snippets, industry references and celebrity cameos, which are plentiful all around in the movie. Peel your eyes for appearances by everyone from Chantawit Thanasewee to Arak Amornsupasiri to Woody Milintachinda.

While the first two chapters rolled out stars from GTH's blockbuster roster, the third 42.195 scores the unexpected pairing of K-pop idol Nichkhun and TV host Suquan Bulakul for a sweet and subtle May-December romance. Jira Malikul, the director of The Tin Mine and resident producer of nearly everything GTH, manages to strike a gentle balance between sensible characters and inspiring melodrama in the portrayal of a 42-year-old woman who finds renewed purpose in life after meeting Nichkhun's young asthmatic marathoner. The super-obvious marathon symbolism and super-sincere characters would grate as a full-length feature, but as the last story in a three-part omnibus, it offers a warm and uplifting finale for GTH's glossy romantic marathon.
