YesAsia Editorial Description

Curse of the Golden Flower co-stars Chow Yun Fat and Gong Li, Japanese actor Watanabe Ken (Memoirs of a Geisha, Inception), and American actor John Cusack meet in Shanghai for a decisive battle of espionage during World War II! The first Asia-based production from Weinstein Company, the mega-star-powered international co-production brought together a crew that includes Swedish director Mikael Hafstrom (1408) and renowned Iranian scriptwriter Hossein Amini (The Wings of the Dove). Oscar-nominated Japanese actress Kikuchi Rinko (Babel), German star Franka Potente (Run Lola Run), and American actors Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Watchmen) and David Morse (Double Vision) round out the stellar supporting cast.

Set in 1941 on the eve of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the big-budget period action thriller revolves around American spy Paul Soames (John Cusack), who arrives in Japanese-occupied Shanghai to investigate the mysterious murder of his friend. His quest for the truth ultimately leads him to Shanghai's underworld kingpin Anthony Lan-Ting (Chow Yun Fat), who has some suspicious dealings with Japanese intelligence officer, Captain Tanaka (Watanabe Ken). Falling for the powerful mob boss's beautiful wife Anna (Gong Li), Paul finds himself in grave danger as he gets entangled in an intricate web of lies and conspiracies...

slow burn Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
A slow paced movie that is ideal for a relaxing evenings entertainment. Decent picture quality and the audio was involving when it needed to be. I had a couple of issues with the disc on my oppo bdp-83 blu ray player. First of all selecting the set up menu was a mistake as i could not get off it again and had to reload the disc and just push play. The sound also dropped out for a split second 3 times during the movie. Both these problems are mastering issues with the disc. Gong li gave her usual dynamic performance, but i felt chow yun fat was a bit underused. This movie is 99% english language but you may need to flip your subtitles on in the last few minutes of the movie to avoid missing some information.
