YesAsia Editorial Description

Hong Kong superstars Leslie Cheung and Andy Lau clash in Tsui Hark's big-screen adaptation of the classic TVB drama The Bund! Directed by Poon Man Kit (To Be Number One), the film revisits the dangerous underworld in 1930s Shanghai where heroes and villains fight for power, women, and honor, with Leslie and Andy taking on the roles played by Chow Yun Fat and Ray Lui in the original. Condensing the essence of a TV series into a feature-length movie is certainly no small challenge, and Shanghai Grand has made some daring changes to the plots and characters that make it fresh even for fans of the 1980 series. Having Tung Wai onboard as action choreographer ensures exciting gunplay action, and the period action drama boasts an impressive supporting cast that includes Ning Jing (In the Heat of the Sun), Wu Hsing Kuo (Green Snake), Lau Shun, singer Amanda Lee, and Korean actor Jung Woo Sung (Reign of Assassins).

Enlisted in Japanese-occupied Taiwan, patriotic young man Hui Man Keung (Leslie Cheung) is dispatched to fight in the northeastern China. In a mission gone awry, he barely escapes from an ambush that leaves all of his fellow rebels dead, only to be saved in Shanghai by small-time gangster Ding Lik (Andy Lau). The two become sworn brothers, joining hands in a bid to make a name for themselves in the gang world of Shanghai. However, their friendship is tested when both Lik and Keung fall for Fung Ching Ching (Ning Jing), the daughter of powerful tycoon Fung King Yiu (Wu Hsing Kuo). A ruthless crime lord in secret, Fung manipulates the two rising stars into working for him. But when Keung finds out that Fung is the man behind the ambush on the anti-Japanese rebels, he must choose between his love for Ching Ching and his loyalty to the fallen comrades...

An epic that wasn't quite so Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
Maybe it's because I am watching this 1996 movie for the first time and only in 2012. It's a movie that tried to do too much in a short span of time: political struggles, romantic love, triad gang fights and the sanctity of brotherhood. So much so that it feels like many fleeting moments strung together to form a story. What stood out for me is the brotherhood between the two male leads, with the easy chemistry between Leslie Cheung and Andy Lau, and a compelling performance by Leslie Cheung. But it feels incredulous to watch Andy Lau's character grow to become a formidable gang leader and yet at the same time be naively smitten like a boy from a junior high school. Still, Shanghai Grand is watchable and I would recommend the movie.

grand indeed! Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
This is a great film and should be everyones collection! I bought this a long time ago on vhs tape and then again on dvd. This blu ray has an excellent picture that is better than the dvd but it looks like its in the wrong aspect ratio and picture information is lost on all 4 sides. The sound is truly awful! The music and bass have been pumped up to stupid levels through all channels meaning the dialogue is buried. As i dont speak chinese and need the english subtitles i got by, but it could be really annoying for those of you lucky enough to speak the language. Also because of the constant assault of the music the heart and soul of the movie was lost. If you dont have a 7.1 surround set up like i do and are watching using sound via a tv it might not be so bad.

Shanghai Grand Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
The story was interesting and fans should not get confused with the original Grand Shanghai (with Patrick Tse and Liza Wang) but I'd expected it to have a better ending. Leslie outshines everyone, including Andy Lau.What a pity Leslie didn't sing the theme song. Andy should have taken a few singing lessons before doing this song. I love this show only because of Leslie. Miss you much!

Grand Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
The film seemed grainy but a good, old school style, romantic gangster flick, especially when the leading men are as handsome. Some confusing use of flashbacks but it all comes together. A quick, entertaining show that offers just enough action at a good pace.
