YesAsia Editorial Description

Chingmy Yau stars in She Starts The Fire, a fish-out-of-water comedy where the fish can set people on fire! Wendy (Chingmy Yau) arrives in Hong Kong to stay with her aunt Big Beer (Deannie Ip), who shares a space with her landlord Charles (Lawrence Cheng, who also directed). There's just one problem: Wendy can set things on fire with her mind. Her pyrokinetic powers are applied simultaneously with some bad luck, so the victim usually gets a double whammy of misfortune and charred flesh. Luckily, Wendy is too kind-heated and pure to use her gifts for personal gain. Unluckily, most people around her are selfish golddiggers who view Wendy's flaming abilities as a ticket to easy street. Soon everyone and their brother is after Wendy, including Charles's evil sister Tracy (Carol Cheng), and some evil gangsters. Eventually Wendy is going to discover she's being used. Will the shock cause her to fizzle or flame on? Chingmy Yau turns in a dynamite performance in this early-nineties Hong Kong laugher, and holds the screen thanks to her sexy presence and talent for wearing bright red hot pants. A laugh-a-minute screwball farce, She Starts The Fire is a perfect way to see Chingmy Yau set the screen - and other people - ablaze!

Combustible Chingmy Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
"She Starts the Fire" proves that a movie that isn't particularly good still can be very entertaining. The movie is clumsily constructed, with subplots that go nowhere, characters that evaporate, and jokes that misfire, yet its zany comic energy overcomes its shortcomings. Lawrence Cheng both directs and stars; he plays Charles, a drone-like employee of a quack TV psychic.

Charles stumbles upon lovely Wendy (Chingmy Yau), a recently orphaned young woman who has journeyed to Hong Kong from the mainland in search of an aunt with whom she hopes to live. Wendy has a very unusual ability; when she becomes emotional, she psychically can start fires! (She also can predict future events and physically manipulate people with her mind.) As it turns out, the aunt whom Wendy seeks is renting a room in Charles's home and Wendy soon finds herself residing in the same abode. Immediately, people seek to exploit Wendy's looks and supernatural gifts. Her aunt (Deannie Yip) wants Wendy to work for her as a bargirl. Others want to put Wendy on TV to compete with Charles's boss. And Charles's unethical sister (DoDo Cheng), a down-on-her-luck plastic surgeon, just wants to sell her a boob job she clearly doesn't need. Poor Wendy just yearns for the simple life.

The conflicting agendas and wild characters are mined for lots of laughs. Chingmy Yau charms by downplaying her role, DoDo Cheng delights with a sexy comic appeal, and Deannie Yip almost steals the show with her bawdy, over-the-top energy. Watch for a hilarious cameo by Kingdom Yuen. "She Starts the Fire" surely isn't high art, but I had fun watching it.
