YesAsia Editorial Description
In Japan, gigantic kaiju creatures keep appearing to the extent that they have become a part of everyday life. Conventional weapons are of little use against the kaiju, and the Japanese government is fast reaching its limits. A special S-Class Species Suppression Protocol task force is formed with leader Tamura Kamio (Nishijima Hidetoshi), executive strategy officer Kaminaga Shinji (Saito Takumi), physicist Taki Akihisa (Arioka Daiki) and biologist Funaberi Yumi (Hayami Akari). One day while Japan is under attack yet again, an unknown giant silver being appears from the skies and fights off the kaiju. Asami Hiroko (Nagasawa Masami) transfers from the Public Security Intelligence Agency to the SSSP task force, which now must not only analyze kaiju but also the mysterious superhero extraterrestrial known as Ultraman.
This edition comes with a bonus disc containing promotional and event videos.

Back in 2017, I effused about the brilliance of Shin Godzilla, a special effects spectacle that combined dry political satire and giant monster destruction into blockbuster entertainment. I low-key hoped there would be a Shin Godzilla sequel from Anno Hideaki and Higuchi Shinji. Instead, we got something even better: Shin Ultraman.
Similar to Shin Godzilla, Shin Ultraman reboots the iconic superhero franchise with an entertaining reimagining of the origin story of an extraterrestrial who lands on Earth and protects the planet from the kaiju monsters and other otherworldly visitors that are wreaking destructive havoc. Portrayed by Saito Takumi, Ultraman, as he comes to be known, assumes the identity of an agent of the government's anti-kaiju task force, which also includes Nagasawa Masami, Nishijima Hidetoshi, Arioka Daiki and Hayami Akari. Shin Ultraman has its tongue firmly in cheek when satirizing government response to developments and portraying the kooky antagonists that want a piece of Earth, but it also embraces the giant heart and spirit of Ultraman. Also the giant body, of course, as Ultraman towers over the landscape to battle kaiju. Though Shin Ultraman is undoubtedly the most visually and technically impressive Ultraman film ever, it maintains a delightfully old-school feel with its scrappy task force in a small office analyzing the great dilemmas facing humanity. Anno Hideaki and Higuchi Shinji update the world of Ultraman with larger-scale effects and wry humor, but this is still the same hero that generations of Japanese children have grown up watching. From the metallic bodysuit and glowing oval eyes to the angular fighting poses and sudden flights into the sky, this latest take on Ultraman retains that distinctive Japanese tokusatsu superhero identity, complete with serious action and earnest feels in a slightly campy tone. Commercial reasons aside, I don't quite understand why Japan has handed over their beloved franchises to Anno Hideaki for satirical reimagining, but I am so ready for Shin Kamen Rider. |
