특급 에이스 태민, 첫 정규앨범 ‘Press It’

Tae Min always surprises me. The mushroom-haired boy is very talented in dancing but when it comes to singing, there is still ample space for improvement. I had never considered his singing abilities until his appearance in the music program Immortal Songs II in 2012, where he performed old pop songs with new arrangement and choreography. To my amazement, Tae Min started his solo activities with the mini-album Ace two years later. I thought that Jong Hyun or Onew would be the first SHINee member to go solo! SM Entertainment obviously foresaw his great potential but I think the first album was just a trial test of his possibilities in the music market rather than recognition of his singing skills. Tae Min should celebrate this time because Press It offers solid proof of his singing skills and identity as a singer, and not just the mushroom-haired boy who can dance.
An album with various music styles, Press It kicks off with dance songs Drip Drop (Track 1) and Press Your Number (Track 2). Drip Drop starts with water dripping sounds, creating a refreshing mood that persists throughout the song along with the addictive offbeat rhythm in the background. Though it is powerful enough to be the title track, it is more suitable as an appetizer before listening to the other songs. The title song Press Your Number is a smooth dance number in R&B and funk style. It begins with slow and quiet verses in Tae Min’s smooth vocals, and then enters a strong chorus with addictive funky guitar riffs that create syncopated rhythms with the backing beats. This song has excellent composition and a catchy melody but it doesn't work on me. The impact of Drip Drop is much greater than this track.
Apart from dance songs, the album also includes ballads. Soldier (Track 3), an expressive yet powerful ballad written by Tae Min, starts quietly with a lonely piano intro which sets a very serious mood for the song. The spotlight is put on Tae Min's vocals when he expresses the feelings of helplessness after breakup. In the second verse, the song's emotions gradually build up as the piano chords get stronger. A rapid emotional change happens when Tae Min cries out "I swear to God, I raise my hand" to show his determination to protect his love, but suddenly cools down as he sings helplessly "I just want to be a soldier." Unable to be with his love again, he opts to be a soldier to protect her all the way, though that's not what he wants.
R&B ballad "Until Today" (Track 9) is definitely my favorite of the album. Following the guitar chords at the beginning, Tae Min's soft and gentle voice comments on those still trapped in past relationships. Tae Min then sings in an exceptionally attractive higher register and emotions gradually soar when percussion joins the melody. The lyrics recall scenes of drinking, sitting motionlessly and listening to sad songs while reminding oneself to not be upset after today. Tae Min's emotions are just right as he conveys the feeling of wretchedness in a more controlled manner.
Some songs are rather dark like Guess Who (Track 5) and Mystery Lover (Track 7). Listening to Guess Who is like watching a horror film. The haunting atmosphere is created by the squeaking of an opening door (though many people say that it's wind) and mysterious sounds of footsteps, screaming and a gunshot. The creepy mood then blends with funky guitar riffs and heavy beats. The song gets even tenser as the riffs and beats get stronger. I love how Tae Min’s low and deep voice effectively creates a dark, mysterious atmosphere for the song.
Mystery Lover is backed by the creepy sound of a music box, setting a mysterious mood for the song. To match the overall feeling, the vocal part in the first few verses is mainly in a low register. Tae Min's voice becomes more aggressive as his emotion intensifies in latter parts to express the excitement of meeting the "mystery Lover." I especially like the transition when the dark melody suddenly turns bright along with the lines "The beautiful dream or / The reality that is going far away, yeah / This night that I waited for you in the darkness / The time that I caressed you." It is also an ingenuous way to express exhilaration and delight.
Some people may not like Press It because it is too experimental and unusual. However, I am really impressed, especially by Tae Min's huge improvement in singing skills and his diversity of music styles. He is no longer limited to dance pop songs and is capable of delivering deeply expressive songs.
