　　海拔約1500公尺的司馬庫斯部落位於雪山山脈的山腰，這裡是臺灣珍貴的檜木林最重要的分佈地區之一，壯闊的巨木區中有著全國排名第二和第三名的巨木。此地區動、植物種類繽紛，與泰雅族人的生活、文化息息相關。在部落通往巨木的步道上，存在相當特殊的景觀，像臺灣特有種鳥類「冠羽畫眉」就在此繁衍，牠們合作生殖、共同餵食幼雛的習性，恰與部落族人獨有的「共同經營」生活方式雷同！

　　本片聚焦於司馬庫斯豐富的動、植物生態，交織出部落族人的生命情境。
《司馬庫斯—森林共和國》也特別邀請了知名歌手溫嵐擔任旁白配音。溫嵐是出身新竹尖石鄉的泰雅族原住民，與司馬庫斯有深厚的生命情感與地緣關係。
