Shin Sang Ok's 1972 period film Sim Cheong is based on the traditional Korean folk tale about a filial daughter whose piety restores her father's sight. To provide for her blind father, poor maiden Sim Cheong sells herself to a Chinese merchant for 300 bags of rice. Unable to live with her decision, she tries to drown herself and gets rescued by the sea king. Falling in love with Sim Cheong, the sea king makes her his queen, and heals her father's eyes.

In a career spanning over half a century, legendary Korean filmmaker Shin Sang Ok directed over 70 films and produced over 100 more. A driving force of Korean Cinema during the 1950s and 1960s, his production company Shin Films put out hundreds of films during this period, helping to forge the industry's Golden Age. Shin also formed a partnership with Hong Kong's Shaw Brothers studio in the 1960s, opening new doors for both industries with massive co-productions. In recognition of the master filmmaker's contributions to Korean film, he was posthumously awarded the Gold Crown Cultural Medal, the country's highest honor for an artist.

*줄거리
홀아버지 심학규에 대한 효성이 지극한 청이는 공양미 삼백석을 시주하면 아버지가 눈을 뜰 수 있다는 얘기를 듣고 도사공의 제숫물이 되어 인당수에 몸을 던진다. 그러나 하느님의 은혜로 다시 인간으로 환생하여 마침 바닷가에 나왔던 왕의 왕비가 된다. 청이에게서 그 동안의 연유를 들은 왕은 맹인잔치를 베풀어 심봉사를 찾는다. 며칠 후 그리던 아버지를 만난 청이는 심봉사를 끌어안고 아버지라고 부르짖는다. 그 소리에 심봉사는 눈을 뜨고 그 자리에 모인 맹인들도 이 바람에 모두 눈을 뜨게 된다. 또한 심한 가뭄에 오랫동안 기다리던 비도 쏟아지니, 나라 안에는 환희가 넘치고 태평성대를 구가하게 된다.

고전 “심청전”을 영화화한 작품이다. 전체적인 내용 전개는 고전의 틀을 충실히 따르고 있으나, 심청이 인당수에 빠진 후 등장하는 용궁 장면은 특수효과의 기술적 완성도에 있어서나 그것이 만들어낸 세계의 모습에 있어서나 파격적이라 할 수 있다. 특히 용왕에 최은희를 기용하여 성역할의 선입견을 깨버린 점, 그 용왕이 다스리는 세계를 여성 지배의 유토피아적 형상으로 만들어낸 점 등은 눈 여겨 볼만하다. 앞을 못 보는 심학규(김성원)는 공양미 삼백 석을 시주하면 눈을 뜰 수 있다는 화주승의 제안에 앞뒤 가리지 않고 승낙하고 만다. 청이(윤정희)가 홀아버지의 눈을 뜨게 하고자 고민한다는 사실을 안 뺑덕어멈(도금봉)은 인신공양을 구하러 다니는 상인들을 소개해주고, 청이는 공양미 삼백 석에 인당수에 몸을 던지고 만다.
