YesAsia Editorial Description

This edition comes with a DVD featuring 12 tracks from Eric's "Cruiser Manifold 903 Live Tour".

Without exaggeration, Eric Suen can be described as a person who has talent written all over him. Originally majoring in Computer Engineering with French as secondary subject, Suen went on to win the grand prize of a songwriting competition held at Hong Kong's Chinese University. As a result he entered the entertainment circle in 1993. Blessed with career experiences in Korea and Japan, Suen is now one of Hong Kong's few stars who also enjoys tremendous popularity in Mainland China.

As for his latest release, So Far So... Close includes both his latest works and a compilation of some of his most memorable hits. Recommendable new songs include "Love Declaration" (CD 1 - Track 2) and "Think First - Love Later" (CD 1 - Track 1), while classics like "Love Story Part 1" (CD 2 - Track 2), "Love Story Part 2" (CD 2 - Track 3), "Still Like You" (CD 2 - Track 8), and "Flying" (CD 2 - Track 5) round off the album's selections. The release also includes the Mandarin song "Know That You're Waiting For Me" (CD 2 - Track 10).

Good to be Back
There's something mildly surreal about seeing Eric Suen back in Hong Kong and back in the local entertainment columns. There he is participating in promotion events, singing on music programs, and even holding a concert - as if he hadn't just spent the last decade of his career in Mandarin market exile. Eric, it's good to have you back. We hadn't realized how much we missed you.

I must admit when I picked up So Far So... Close, it was not so much for the music but the person, or more specifically for that residual fuzzy feeling of 90s pop idol goodwill. I purchased Lose, Eric's most recent "new songs/best of" Mandarin album, for the same reason in 2002, and that album was a disaster as he attempted trendy music stylings that simply did not fit. So Far So...Close, however, is a surprisingly good Canto-pop offering. With an earthy selection of eminently listenable mid-tempo ballads, this has turned out to be one of the (alarmingly) few Hong Kong albums this year that I actually like.

So Far So... Close starts wisely with its best song, "Think First, Love Later" (Track 1). The simple, but catchy melody from Tse Kok Hung, serviceable lyrics from business-as-usual Lin Xi, and nice piano and string arrangement add up to a great pop ballad. Surprisingly, what really lifts this song is Eric's performance. Apparently, thirteen years in the business have not been for nought, because his voice has gained an emotional depth and maturity that I had never noticed before, especially in the lower notes. His singing throughout the album is crisp and clean with - newcomers take note - clear enunciation. Going two-for-two, Tse's other contribution, "Vice Rises Ten Times Higher" (Track 6), is also a winner. The melody feels comfortable, yet different with a standout chorus and great vocal arrangement.

Another outstanding ballad is "Love Declaration" (Track 2), composed by Ronald Ng with lyrics from - who else? - Lin Xi. Short, sweet, and earpleasing, the karaoke-friendly melody is complemented by an excellent arrangement that, while not particularly original, effectively highlights the song's soft and dramatic moments. Again, Eric's delivery here is smooth and on the mark. Unfortunately, Ronald Ng and Lin Xi's other collaboration, "No One is Spared" (Track 9), is significantly less commendable; the melody is basically a series of been-there-done-that pop cliches tacked together with bad transitions.

Eric Suen himself composed "I Love Her Because I Love You" (Track 3), which gets an enthusiastic "not bad". The melody is indistinct but the chorus has a good flow, making for a good-while-it-lasts number. Also living in solid side track territory are "Self Love" (Track 7) and "Protect You Forever" (Track 4). The latter is particularly reminiscent of a 90s ballad with its combination of grounded verses and catchy chorus that approaches dangerously close to cheesy cute. The album's sole fast track, "Kill in a Second" (Track 5) by C.Y. Kong, also has a confused throwback feel to it. The whole thing is a bit messy - octave jumps, busy background noise, vacuous lyrics - and I still maintain that Eric is not suited for fast songs, but the track is harmless enough overall. Does no good, but also does no damage.

"The Benefits of Being Single" (Track 8) and "Peaceful Breakup" (Track 10), both composed by Choy Chi Ho, are what I would call Eason Chan-style songs. Though quite different in tone, they have the somewhat catchy, somewhat formless free-flowing melody that Eason would hit out of the ballpark and lesser singers would completely bumble. How does Eric fare? Again, not bad at all. His performance on the jazzy "The Benefits of Being Single" isn't relaxed enough and the pacing is a bit off on "Peaceful Breakup", but otherwise, he handles the songs quite well. In addition to the new tracks, we also get a second CD of "classics", which basically amounts to perennial favorite "Love Story" plus some other songs, and a DVD of his 903 concert that allows us to compare 2007 Eric Suen's rendition of "Love Story" to the original.

With the Canto-pop scene going officially nowhere, the last few years have opened up a space for grateful nostalgia, be it concerts for semi-retired stars like Shirley Kwan and Vivian Chow, the fabulous revival of the Soft Hard Kids, or the deluge of reissue albums. With Eric Suen's comeback, I can only say that it seems we're not only missing the stars that ruled the 90s, we're even missing the stars that got unceremoniously shook out in the 90s. Kevin Cheng came back, Eric Suen is back. Quick, somebody call Wallace Chung.

It was a fabulos concert! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I am not a fan of Eric, but this CD and DVD did not disappoint me. He has a beautiful and clearly voice. Listen the album, you will glad his back. He can really sing. Watch this DVD, It was a fabulous concert. What makes watching him so wonderful? His sense of humor, his smile, his emotion really lights up the audience in the concert. Actually his performances beyond my expectation. If you have never seen a Eric concert, this CD & DVD make it clear why his come back is truly a fresh breath of air in HK's contonpop music. Highly recommend to anyone who likes quality music. I truly believe he will be one of the great star in Chinese music industry.

great comeback Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
i have to say..i haven't heard who was eric suen until he made his comeback last year w/the 'perfect match' cd

i was already drawn by his voice..his unique mature voice that sounds very different from any other artist

onto the cd..the song selection is good..most are typical canto pop..but there are some hip hop fast songs incorporated into it

track 1 - great his vocals..full of emotions and everythings gives a great overall flow

track 2 - this has less arrangment of you hera more of eric's vocals..he can't reach as high as leo or eason..but he still does have a wide range of vocal

track 3 - song composed by eric..didn't even realize he writes his own songs too..i dind't find this song too outstanding..but at least he put effort into creating his own music

track 7 - this song brings back to the 90s feel..great piano intro with the additional of the bass..this song again draws eric's great emotions and very catchy to listen

i've heard track 1/7 live on other performances..all of them was performed with perfect off-key areas

i saw the dvd of his concert too..all songs performed were great..i like how he tries to be different by dancing..singing other artist's songs..using different musical arrangements

overall this cd is worth your time to listen and watch
i'm glad eric has come back..i wish he can do more in the future and produce more great songs

This customer review refers to So Far So... Close (New + Best Selection) (2CD)
Welcome back, Eric! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
It has been a few years since Eric's last album, and 9 years since his last Cantonese album. This new album has fallen in to the likes of recent Cantopop, but hey, if the market calls for it, who can complain? Eric's voice has matured beautifully, and he sings each voice with such emotion that it goes beyond my expectations. The promoted songs (1,2,3,7) are all likeable. Track 7 becomes more addictive eacdh time I play it. Track 3 is seems rather plain at first, but after a few more times, I realized it is a simple, but beautiful ballad. Track 2 would have been my favorite, but the chorus falls into what I call the "boring Canto-pop chorus syndrome," which doesn't fit with the song. Tracks 6 is a different type of song, but Eric renders it with his normal voice and falsetto wonderfully. Of the non-promoted songs, tracks 4,5, and 8 are my favorites. Track 4 is extremely cute and light, in contrast to all the sad love songs. Track 5 also stands out, with a unique beat.
