YesAsia Editorial Description

Korean comics (or "manhwa") have recently been inspiration for many films, such as the blockbuster hits Tazza and 200 Pounds Beauty. Now director Oh Ki Hwan (The Art Of Seduction) hops on the comics-to-film bandwagon with Someone Behind You. The film is based on a best-selling comic book titled "Two People", which tells of an old family curse marking one person dead at the hands of two people in every generation. Created by popular science-fiction comic artist Kang Kyung Ok, the original comic version has received critical acclaim from media and comic art fans. Staying true to its genre, Someone Behind You provides a bloodbath of horror using familiar scare tactics like gory visuals and chilling audio effects. Combining Oh's understanding of mainstream trends and Kang's meticulously devised, twist-laden plot, this creepy screamer is a horror-thriller like no other.

After witnessing the murder of her eldest aunt by her youngest aunt, Ka In (Yoon Jin Suh, A Day For An Affair) encounters a series of deadly, unexplainable occurrences in her life. Her classmate attacks her without warning, and her fencing teacher and even her own mother attempt to kill her. Meanwhile, watching Ka In's paranoia is Suk Min (Park Ki Woong, My Tutor Friend 2), a mysterious boy rumored to have murdered his own father. No stranger to dark deeds, Suk Min teaches Ka In that the only way to survive the coming horrors is to trust no one. Not knowing who to turn to for help, and not trusting her own boyfriend Hyun Joong (Lee Ki Woo, Sad Movie), Ka In searches desperately for clues, finally learning of the bizarre family curse that has marked her dead. Now all she needs to do is identify the killers. But who are they?

Professional Review of "Someone Behind You (VCD) (Korea Version)"

November 26, 2007

This professional review refers to Someone Behind You (DVD) (Limited Edition) (Korea Version)
Someone Behind You sees Korean director Oh Ki Hwan turning his hand to horror after enjoying success with the romantic comedy The Art Of Seduction. Based on a popular and critically acclaimed comic by Kang Kyung Ok called Two People, while the film looks to all intents and purposes like yet another high school ghost story in the vein of Whispering Corridors and countless others, it thankfully serves up something quite different, mainly thanks to a very welcome injection of bloody gore and brutal murders, and due to the fact that, against all the odds, there is nary a long haired female ghost in sight.

The film follows high school student Ka In (actress Yoon Jin Suh, recently in A Day For An Affair), whose life is thrown into turmoil when she witnesses one of her aunts plummet from a balcony on her wedding day, possibly having been pushed by her husband to be. Things go from bad to worse after the poor woman is hacked into pieces while in hospital by another aunt, and Ka In herself is attacked by a nerdy though homicidal classmate. Repeatedly warned by a constantly lurking weirdo called Suk Min (Park Ki Woong, also in comedy sequel My Tutor Friend 2) to trust no-one, not even herself, she is beset by further assaults that seem to suggest that some kind of sinister curse is afoot. Understandably keen to solve the mystery before she ends up dead, Ka In looks to the past for the answers, leading her to a closet full of family skeletons and gruesome secrets.

To get the bad out of the way first, Someone Behind You suffers from an overly familiar plot, being yet another variation on The Grudge. All the cliches of the modern Asian ghost genre are present and correct, from the usual tortured female protagonist, the secrets just begging to be spilled, and the abundance of explanatory flashbacks, right through to the time-honoured mysterious old person living in a remote cabin who just happens to have the answers. Matters are not helped by a final twist so obvious that it barely counts and the fact that the film is an incoherent narrative mess.

Of course, such criticisms are unlikely to deter horror fans, and the good news is that Someone Behind You scores highly in every department that really counts, delivering visceral thrills in a full-blooded manner painfully absent from so many of its peers. Packing in plenty of shocks and boasting a decidedly respectable body count, it arguably succeeds simply through being unashamed of the fact that it is first and foremost a horror film, and as such is designed to scare. Certainly, the attacks on Ka In come thick and fast, with seemingly every member of the cast wanting to kill her at one point or another, and since the viewer never knows which character is likely to go psycho next, the film is exciting and tense throughout.

It also helps that the film is extremely mean-spirited, with a paranoid, nihilistic streak a mile wide, basically revolving around the belief that everyone has jealousy and darkness in their heart which at some point will make them wish others dead. Right from the start it is made clear that no-one is safe, and this pleasantly callous willingness to dispose of characters, be they sympathetic and innocent or not, gives the proceedings a manic, hysterical edge. Best of all though is the complete absence of sentimentality and melodrama, one of the most common pitfalls of the Korean horror genre - something for which the film surely deserves to win an award and which makes it far more effective and satisfying than it might otherwise have been.

Although rather workmanlike, Oh's direction is efficient enough, and he manages to keep things moving at a brisk pace, showing the good sense to toss in another shriek scene whenever things threaten to slow down. Clocking in at just one hour and twenty minutes, the film is admirably lean, and certainly never outstays its welcome.

All things considered, Someone Behind You is probably the most entertaining and enjoyable of this year's batch of Korean horror films, and whilst it is unlikely to be remembered after the credits roll, it offers a bloody burst of fun while it lasts that is guaranteed to appeal to all genre fans.

Devil Don't Care Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I've certainly enjoyed the S. Korean horror/ghost/thriller movies this year and although some could have been a little better, overall all have been top quality projects with cinematography to die for (sorry about that pun) and I'm confident that next year's S Korean dark materials will be even better! I love all what S Korea do anyways, and I'm like a big school girl when it comes to these films - that is, I can't wait to see them!- and I'm just grateful to catch some of these genre movies this year. Likewise, here is another high quality horror production helmed by director Ki Hwan Oh, to help you keep the back of your sofa company!

Although this movie is disturbing and violent in parts - and certainly what you have here is a very well made dark and grim psycho thriller - the nature of the deaths are more a pastiche; amplifications of negative jealousy and revengeful emotions- all impressed upon by a sinister devil character. Its about abnormal dark human emotions that have been clustered and accentuated together, and played out into this dark drama of death and revenge. Its also based on a Korean Gothic horror type manawa, and in a similar categorical vein to the manga "Death Note" series of Japanese anime/movies. As mentioned, there is a lot of blood letting in this, but all fantastically overkill in this case - reflecting its fantasy root thematic. Its not gore and blood that makes a great film alone anyway, I suppose, but more about plot elements - and when the latter is emphasized, the better quality movie. Thankfully, here, you get a good balanced dollop of both in this great atmospheric thriller chiller and with excellent pacing - sure to keep you on the edge of your seat throughout!

As the synopsis mentions, high school student Ka In witnesses a sinister family murder at a wedding reception, where at first her one aunt is pushed over a balcony only to then be murdered by another of Ka In's aunts in a fit of jealous rage within a hospital, which then triggers a series of usual death threats towards Ka In. Nealy everyone seems to hate her for some reason (even the school class swot gets in on the act!), and this makes you wonder if its her own paranoia of being harmed through fear, or a mad reality of hate that has no reason. Is Ka In cursed or is she deluded? Well, I'm not going to tell you that, as this is another highly recommended movie for you to look into.

Its certainly interesting (as well as violent), tackling the 'anger/jealousy' syndrome of universal stressful emotions and human reactions towards negative situations. Crimes of passion, pained sense of loss etc - all exemplified in jealous rages here - and generally to un-popular gal Ka In! Its great acting again from Jin Seo Yun as Ka In (and who was in the recent "A Day for an Affair") the troubled teen, and some good performances by a lot of the cast especially the actresses who play Ka In's mother and sister. Ki Woo Lee portrays well as the Ji Tae Yu looking medic boyfriend of Ka In (does that sound nearly like Kain?) and Ki Woong Park (who appeared in "My Tutor Friend : Second Lesson") as the enigmatic and sinister 'devil' character, is certainly played out with an urber cool aesthetic. Overall: its nasty, its gripping, its chilling, its interesting...and its a bloody good film!

OST by Jun Seok Kim
One additional mentionable here is that "Someone Behind You" also has one great OST score and the CD is also worth recommending. Its by music director Jun Seok Kim who also gave us "Once Upon a Time in High School" and the M & F Music Group (who also gave us "Lover's Concerto") are a pedigree worth recommending alone. And this score delivers! Its got a great melancholic and emotional main theme, a killer end song (sorry) and some of the most re-worked but imaginative incidental horror music. This CD soundtrack even as some jumpy scares in sounds too! Recommended!

Cursed? Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
A great watch! Violent and grisly so not for those with weak stomachs! The film was a bit predictable but it doesn't steal any of the viewing pleasure.
Good English subs, great quality disc and nicely packaged (both the slipcase and the DVD sleeve).

Someone Behind You Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
This is one suprisingly brutal movie. After witnessing
a frenzied knife attack at a wedding and the bride is almost in a coma in hospital, a family member decides
to finish her off in a similar fashion. Throughout the whole movie one of the sisters always seems to be present when the mayhem begins, is there are curse on her love for her boyfriend? Her friends and even her own family seem to want her to die, is this just a dream or reality? Talk about a bloodbath, makes "Psycho" second rate. Extremely violent and very nasty.
