YesAsia Editorial Description

After making a foray into drama with A Scene at the Sea, Kitano Takeshi returned to the yakuza genre for his fourth directorial effort Sonatine, which screened in the Un Certain Regard sidebar of the 1993 Cannes Film Festival. Kitano himself stars in the dark and violent film as jaded gangster Murakawa who gets sent to Okinawa by his boss to mediate a minor dispute between two other yakuza clans. Murakawa suspects the mission may be a setup and, sure enough, he and his men get ambushed. While laying low at a seaside house, the men amuse themselves with dangerous games, and Murakawa befriends a local woman. But the brief interim of peace is soon disrupted by the appearance of an assassin.

Great film of yakuza life Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
"Sonatine" is an unusually good gangster film. Takeshi Kitano seems to have a deep understanding of both the absurdity and the deadly seriousness of yakuza life. In this, "Sonatine" bears some similarity to Juzo Itami's "Minbo". However, "Minbo" is a very angry comic film, reflecting Itami's hatred of the yakuza; it depicts the yakuza as thuggish boobs. Kitano's vision is less judgmental and is framed in scenes of startling beauty.

Kitano plays a yakuza leader named Murakawa. He and his gang are sent to Okinawa to defend the interests of his gang's affiliate there. They end up becoming enmeshed in a violent gang war, with more at stake for Murakawa personally than he originally had suspected.

This description of the story, while accurate, is also a bit misleading. Much of the film is spent showing the Murakawa's gang holed up in a house on a remote Okinawan beach waiting for something to happen. We see the gangsters engage in children's games to pass the time. It leads to several hilarious scenes and features cinematography of exceptional beauty. Kitano also makes effective use of Okinawan folk music to underline the strangeness of the setting.

The ending of "Sonatine" has left many people scratching their heads in wonder. I believe that Kitano gives us two clues to help us understand the ending. First, recall the image we see at the film's opening, an image of a speared fish. Second, recall that Murakawa speaks of how tired he is. Keep those thoughts in mind when you watch the end of this film.

For its abrupt violence and brief nudity, "Sonatine" is not suitable for kids, but I can recommend it wholeheartedly for a mature audience. This is a terrific film!
