Ivy Ling Po was at the height of her fame in traditional Huangmei Opera films -- and chiefly as a male impersonator -- when she radically changed her image, taking on an ultra-contemporary semi-musical role in Song Of Tomorrow. Ivy plays a dance hostess and leading man Chiao Chuang is a jazz drummer, but with a difference. Chiao is a heroin addict, and Ivy learns that heroin is a far more lethal adversary than "the other woman" when trying to keep their marriage intact.

Involving tale of addiction
Involving tale of addiction
In "Song of Tomorrow", Qiao Zhuang plays a successful drummer in a nightclub band who loves Ivy Ling and, to repay her dead father for teaching him how to play drums, pays for Ivy's vocal lessons and supports her family. Two schemers selfishly hope to tear Ivy and Qiao Zhuang apart and they do so by feeding Qiao's drug addiction and secretly telling Ivy of that addiction. A pattern sets in of Qiao repeatedly trying to resist his addiction in order to keep Ivy from leaving him, until his craving for the drug overcomes him. Can Qiao conquer his addiction and save their relationship? Qiao Zhuang gives one of his best performances as the tortured addict; he effectively portrays his character's life-or-death internal struggle. Ivy Ling has a more subtle role to play, as the caring woman who wants to be supportive without enabling Qiao's problem. While the film has some heavy-handed moments near the end, it mostly provides an honest and gripping depiction of this loving couple's war against addiction. As an added bonus, the film is loaded with great music (including, oddly, the theme song from the old "Batman" TV show and an all-girl band playing a wild rendition of the Surfari's surf-rock classic "Wipe Out"). "Song of Tomorrow" is very highly recommended. |

An Excellent & Inspiring Shaw Brothers Production
An Excellent & Inspiring Shaw Brothers Production
I am a new YesAsia subscriber and very happy with the videos I received recently.
I had just finished watching Song of Tomorrow and was thoroughly inspired by the script, the parts of husband and wife played by Chiao Chuang and my most favourite actress, Ivy ling Po respectively. Being an Intensive Care Nurse myself, I can relate to the harmful effects and withdrawal symptoms of drug addiction on the patients so I was very impressed with Chiao Chuang who portrayed as a drug addict so well with determination to kick off the habit in the end. On the other hand, Ivy Ling Po, who normally portrayed as a handsome male character in Huang-mei movies, certainly acted very well in this modern classic as a strong, sensitive and supportive wife. Three cheers for the director, Doe Chin. |

Ivy Battles Husband's Drug Addiction
Ivy Battles Husband's Drug Addiction
Ivy Ling Po plays a nightclub singer in this groundbreaking movie that was simply ahead of its time in the 60s. How many movies in that era dare to deal with drug addiction? For her role, Shaws spared no expense and specially commissioned a lavish wardrobe for her making her look her most beautiful ever during her Shaw tenure. The 3 songs in the movie are excellent and have become classics. They are however not karaoke staples as you need to have a good voice with a wide range to sing them. This is especially true of the inspiring title song "Song Of Tomorrow". Ably supported by Chiao Chuang as her husband and real-life husband Chin Han as his best friend, Ivy Ling Po gives one hell of a performance as a sensitive, caring and loving wife deetermined to fight the drug scourge. |
