New-generation idol Chen Linong from Nine Percent makes his film debut in the period fantasy Soul Snatcher alongside popular TV heartthrob Li Xian (Go Go Squid!). Directed by Song Haolin and Yi Liqi, the film offers a new take on the classic folk legends of fateful encounters between innocent scholars and magical fox spirits. Based on the best-selling novel Chun Jiang Hua Yue Ye, Soul Snatcher is co-produced by Monster Hunt director Raman Hui, and features music by Hisaishi Joe and special effects from South Korea's Dexter Studios, the VFX house behind Along with the Gods.
Poor scholar Wang Zijin (Chen Linong) sets out for the capital to take the imperial exam. Along the way, he befriends Bai Shisan (Li Xian), a fox spirit who has come to the human world to take an elixir from a human so he can become immortal. Bai deliberately gets close to Wang in hopes of earning his trust and snatching his soul, but they develop a strong camaraderie while facing dangers together. In the end, Bai must make a choice between friendship and immortality.
