YesAsia Editorial Description

Chow Yun Fat and Cherie Chung star as lovers again, after their representative An Autumn's Tale, in the supernatural love story Spiritual Love (1987). A nice blend of comedy and horror, the film revolves around the love between a man and a female ghost - a popular topic which famous titles like A Chinese Ghost Story and Rouge are about. Spiritual Love also stars Pauline Wong as a fierce ghost and Deannie Ip as a ghostbuster. The film earned Ip a Best Supporting Actress nomination at the Hong Kong Film Awards in 1987.

A debt collector for a loan shark, Pok (Chow Yun Fat) lives with his cousin Chelsea (Deannie Ip), a Taoist Priest and a ghostbusting expert. One day the almost-penniless Pok finds an ancient desk extremely attractive and buys it with his last money. He finds a posthumous letter written by a girl named Hsiao-Tieh, saying that she will re-incarnate if a man is willing to sacrifice 3 years of his life for her. Pok follows the instruction and encounters the re-incarnated Hsiao-Tieh (Cherie Chung). Meanwhile, his selfish ex-girlfriend Fung (Pauline Wong) wants to fake a suicide to blackmail Pok, but that accidentally becomes real. Fung transforms into a fierce ghost to haunt Pok and Hsiao-Tieh...

Terrific performance by Cherie Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"Spiritual Love" delivers wild entertainment in spite of itself. The construction of its story is chaotic, but it has a nice romance at its heart and a host of memorable performances. Pok (Chow Yun Fat) is a low-level hood, an ineffective debt-collector for a loan shark. Always short of funds, Pok lives with his cousin Chelsea (a very boyish-looking Deannie Ip), who is a rather odd Taoist priest with a penchant into bursting into songs from Cantonese operas. Just when it appears that Pok is losing his money-grubbing girlfriend Fung (Pauline Wong) to a man who can support her champagne tastes, a new woman enters Pok's life, the mysterious Hsiao-Tieh (Cherie Chung). Cousin Chelsea understands the mystery behind Hsiao-Tieh -- she is a ghost -- and seeks to dispatch her back to the nether realm. But Pok quickly falls head over heels in love with the comely spirit.

For fans of Cherie, this movie is an absolute must-buy. She looks absolutely gorgeous and her role fits her like a glove; she has never been more appealing. Deannie Ip and Pauline Wong also create strong impressions. For me, Chow Yun Fat's performance is more problematic; I find his comedic acting very overbroad, but I know that others embraced his bumbling style.

"Spiritual Love", with all its weird Taoist spells, operatic songs, and ghostly goings-on, is a wild celebration of late-80s Hong Kong culture. Its combination of touching romance, goofy comedy, and supernatural action make it a rich (if sometimes bewildering) entertainment. And Cherie Chung makes this movie something very special.

A Funny Ghost Story Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Dated special effect but a good cast and a good script still makes this movie shine. The ghost-hunting scenes in the disco work for me.

Amusing Tale of Comedy Horror Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Comedic Horror Tale of Horror with Chow Yun Fat as a kind-hearted debt collector and Cherie Chung as the ghost that he saves. The chemistry between Chow Yun Fat and Cherie is amusing and electrifying. With Yun Fat at his comical bumbling best and Cherie Chung looking as sexy as ever. Despite the age of the movie, it still is a top notch comical horror both sad and funny at times - Highly Recommended
