Banned from filmmaking in China after Summer Palace, Sixth Generation director Lou Ye nonetheless returned to the Cannes Film Festival in 2009 with the gay drama Spring Fever, which won Best Screenplay at Cannes. Shot secretly in Nanjing on handheld camera, the film links together three men and two women in a sexually charged and poetically melancholic love affair. Private detective Haitao (Chen Sicheng) is hired by teacher Lin Xue (Jiang Jiaqi) to spy on her husband (Wu Wei) and his gay lover Jiang Chen (Qin Hao, Chongqing Blues). Haitao himself, however, becomes romantically involved with Jiang Chen, forming a feverish, self-destructive love triangle with his girlfriend Li Jing (Tan Zhuo).
