지난 2007년 데뷔 후 감성적이면서도 밝은 스타일의 음악으로 대중들에게 많은 사랑을 받았던 써니힐이 2년의 준비 기간을 거쳐 한층 업그레이드된 모습으로 돌아왔다.
써니힐은 새 멤버 2명을 영입해 5인조로 팀을 재정비하며 그룹의 활동 폭을 넓히는 한편, 보다 넓고 다양한 음악 스펙트럼을 선보이기 위해 작곡/작사/프로듀싱 등의 음악 공부를 통해 내적, 외적으로 실력을 다지는 시간을 가졌다.
써니힐의 이번 새 앨범 에는 국내 최고의 드림팀이 함께 해 최고의 완성도를 자랑한다. 브라운아이드걸스-아이유를 국내 최정상에 올려놓으며 가요계의 새로운 트렌드를 제시해온 조영철 프로듀서의 진두지휘 아래 이민수, 김이나, KZ, saint binary 등 가요계 최고의 드림팀이 써니힐의 새 앨범을 위해 뭉쳤다. 여기에 멤버들이 직접 작가진으로 앨범에 참여해 그간 숨겨두었던 실력을 뽐냈다.
특히, 써니힐의 이번 새 앨범에는 국내 최고의 클래식&재즈 전문 레이블 ‘루비스폴카’의 소속 연주자들이 직접 연주에 참여해 곡의 완성도를 높였으며, 클래식 피아니스트이자 다양한 장르에서 활동 중인 박종훈이 작곡한 인트로 ‘Girl with a Accordion’을 시작으로 주옥 같은 곡들로 가득 차 있다.
타이틀곡 는 브라운아이드걸스의 ‘아브라카다브라’, ‘사인’, 가인의 ‘돌이킬 수 없는’, 아이유의 ‘잔소리’, 좋은 날’ 등을 연이어 히트시킨 이민수 작곡가 – 김이나 작사가 콤비가 써니힐을 위해 야심 차게 준비한 작품이다. 독창적인 사운드가 귀를 사로잡는 는 애시드 재즈 댄스곡으로, 모든 악기 소스를 리얼연주와 어쿠스틱 사운드로 구성하였으며, 보컬 역시 오토튠을 사용하지 않고 멤버들의 창법 자체에 신스 느낌의 보이스를 구현해 트렌디한 사운드를 살리면서 빈티지한 매력을 극대화시켰다. 무대 위와 무대 뒤의 현실이 완벽하게 희극과 비극으로 대치되는 아이러니와 고통스러운 훈련을 통해서 나오는 퍼포먼스에 열광하는 사람들, 그 곳에서만이 주인공이 되는 서커스 히로인들의 슬픈 흥겨움을 그린 가사는 듣는 이의 마음을 울리게 만든다.
이번 앨범의 co-producer로서 음악적 역량을 마음껏 발휘한 장현이 작곡하고 미성과 함께 작사한 ‘꼭두각시’는 서정적이면서도 몽환적인 멜로디와 각 멤버들의 매력적인 보컬이 어우러진 곡이다. 빈티지한 기타 사운드와 틀에 얽매이지 않는 과감한 편곡으로 높은 완성도를 자랑하는 ‘꼭두각시’는 곡을 듣는 순간 앞으로 멤버들이 작품자로서 보여줄 가능성에 집중하게 된다.
멤버들의 또 다른 자작곡인 ‘Let’s talk about’은 브라운아이드걸스의 'L.O.V.E', 'You' 아이유의 '잔혹동화'를 작곡한 saintbinary와 미성, 코타의 합작품으로 ‘할 말은 해야겠다’라는 다소 무거울 법한 테마를 재치있는 가사로 풀어낸 곡이다. 본인들의 경험담을 바탕으로 써 내려간 가사는 미성과 코타의 감각을 엿볼 수 있으며, 멤버들의 보컬 실력뿐만 아니라 자연스럽게 구사하는 랩 실력 또한 주목할 만 하다. 더불어 본인의 히트곡 제목을 소재로 위트 있게 피쳐링에 참여한 지아는 응원 차 녹음실에 방문했다가 즉석에서 피쳐링을 해주는 돈독한 우정을 과시하였으며 결과적으로 본 곡의 반전이 되는 강렬한 인상을 남겼다.

I immediately fell in love with the concept behind Midnight Circus, and it's just an added bonus that the vocalist are excellent and extremely talented. They sound amazing live and the stage concept just draws you in. It's hard for amazing vocal talent to be promoted well in korea if they don't have killer "looks". I love how this group doesn't seem to have a must be "hot" image. They do clean up well on stage, but you can clearly see that the vocals come first in their performances.
hen it comes to the non-promotional tracks, Puppetry is my favorite track on this mini album. It has the perfect balance of acoustics and R&B. This is a song I can't help but listen to countless times once its played once. I love how all the singers compliment each other. |

Sunny Hill’s previous two singles were quite cute pop affairs; catchy songs that could easily have made the then trio SH more popular at the time. Especially “Good-bye New York” and “My Girl”. If you like SH’s “Midnight Circus” here, these earlier singles, if ever re-issued, are worth investigating. But the theme of “Midnight Circus” swings to a much darker cabaret theatre and different music style, prevalent of the avant garde although mainly another concurrent k-pop theme. Dark circus concepts aren’t un-common and even W&Whale is coming out with some Circusss antics. But this SH mini album is good, very good. The “Girl with a Accordion” intro brings in appropriate ‘welcome to the circus show’ music, leading into the dark but wonderfully evocative melody of “Puppetry”, a mix of jazzy upbeat ballad, acoustic melancholia and occasional rap bursts. The girls’ backing vocal harmony reverb on this is beautifully haunting. Main song “Midnight Circus” as a Latinish ska dance beat with Hammond organ sound, electronic piano and sprightly vocals and rhythm with “Let’s Talk About” a more upbeat disco song, with electronic and interpolated hip-hop and the nearest sound to SH stable mates Brown Eyed Girls.
The whole conceptual is about a secret midnight ‘puppet theatre’ that reflects the dark forms of life and media. A puppet master and his caged women, symbolic of the manoeuvring and hypnotised (like TV), entices with deadpan circus gags (joke), tricks, bondage and sexual themes. Sunny Hill play out these symbolic themes as a circus magician ‘pulling the strings’ of beautifully damned women (the white swan, the pole dancer, the singer, the magazine fashion model, the actor et al) ‘trapped’ or ‘chained’ inside a ‘theatre’ of orchestration; the circus master mesmerising with hypnotic ‘tricks’ and alluring an ‘audience’, aware only of the superfluous. But subconsciously aware they’re also rapt in a web ‘game’ of intrigue. The puppet master, or beautician, ‘magically’ beautifies the relentless and sexualised puppets, with ‘slight of hand’ magnetic tricks to gloss over the circus prison, with the beautifully hypnotised ‘running through hoops’ for the circus master’s ‘drugged’ audience. In the end there’s ‘freedom’ but watch the “Midnight Circus” MV and dance choreography for that. If you like “Midnight Circus” try Romantic Couch’s “My House is your House”, especially “Like a Virgin”, which includes SH on backing vocals. Thanks SH for your autographs. ;D |

“Midnight Circus” is a potpourri of tricks, cliches, and taboos. It’s semi-dark with a dash of the very quirks that have come to define the Brown Eyed Girls under the Nega Network. There isn’t much emotion here, but who needs it when you’re having to endure drilling synths while simultaneously being swallowed by reverb? Not me. These songs have a life of their own.
Sunny Hill have stepped back into the world of K-pop only after throwing all convention to the wind. It’s true that this EP rings bells of Brown Eyed Girls, but even if Sunny Hill took a bite off of a familiar musical style, it’s still a refreshing sound that K-pop simply cannot survive without. There’s character here, a gorgeous use of vocal processing, and the quality is top-notch. Coming from Leon Entertainment, I don’t think I could have it any other way. If you’re a fan of exciting beats, wanderlust, and bouncy pop songs, this EP is for you. |
