YesAsia Editorial Description

Director Lou Ye (Purple Butterfly) is the mastermind behind Suzhou River, a compelling, neo-noir thriller set in modern-day China. Meimei (Zhou Xun) is the performer of a famed mermaid show in a local bar, who attracts the attention of the unseen narrator, and an ex-con named Mardar (Jia Hong Sheng). Both men are enthralled by Meimei, but Mardar has a dark past which continues to haunt him. Once upon a time, Mardar was in love with a pretty, innocent girl named Moudan (also played by Zhou Xun). His affection for her was pure, but his involvement in the criminal underworld would destroy any chance of love. Moudan was ripped from him, and Mardar was sent to jail. Now a free man, Mardar is confronted with Moudan's doppelganger, Meimei. What, if any relation do the two women have with one another? Released in the United States as Suzhou River, Lou Ye's Suzhou recalls the dark romance and fascinating mystery of Alfred Hitchcock's classic Vertigo. Winner of many international film festival awards, including a Best Actress trophy at the 2000 Paris Film Festival for Zhou Xun's compelling dual performance.

Good twist in the end Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
Overall a good film and nice little story. I thought the leading male actor (biker) was a bit dumb. I saw this film in 2000/1 at The Metro in London. Hope to see more film like this one in the near future. Enjoy!

a film with style Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I saw this film at MOMA (New York) last year(2000). I just love it. The Sixth Generation, which is completely different from Fifth Generation (Chen Kaige, Zhang Yimou, etc), is now labeled as "Urban Generation" by film schools in US. I think it is an important film by Urban Generation filmmaker.
